Cena Undergoes Successful Surgery, When He's Expected Back
08/26/2008 by Chris Cash

After Cena's surgery today, World Wrestling Entertainment announced that the prognosis was "excellent".

Dr. Joseph Maroon, who performed the surgery, said that Cena could start working out as early as next week and should be back in the ring in the next 2-4 months. The earliest you can expect him back would be Survivor Series or at the latest, The Royal Rumble 2009.

Dr. Maroon told the WWE website, “We performed a microsurgical removal of a large disk fragment compression on the spinal cord which was weakening the nerve leading to the right arm," He also said, "We created a small incision in the front of the neck using an operating microscope to remove the fragment from the spinal cord and nerve. The operation took approximately an hour and a half."

The basic feeling within WWE is that the company and Cena were both extremely lucky the injury wasn't worse, as it could have necessitated fusion surgery.

If I were Cena, I'd be taking my sweet 'ol time on recuperating. You don't want to be rushing back after something like this.

If it were anyone else in the world, I'd say 2 - 4 months is too optimistic. Seeing as how John Cena heals as quick as Wolverine (and thats quick!), he could indeed be back in that time frame.

I would definately recommend dragging out the recoupe time a bit. Better safe than sorry.

Cena should take his sweet time recuperating, but whether WWE will let him drag it out is another story. They'd be smart to let him take as much time as possible. Then bring him back and turn him heel to freshen up his character. Likely won't happen, though.

Edit: Apparently Cena is now out indefinitely. Involves serious issues with his neck. I'm not a big Cena fan, but that's awful.
