Can I get recommendations for good code and warnings against bad code in the avenue of Chat Client Software ?

I'm told that I can sign up for various services annonymously for zero money, but have avoided that because of the software requirements. (I am NOT going to learn a new set of rules for every machine on the internet.) Anyway,,,
