As many of you know, I've been spending time helping out other webmasters in the community get sites going. I've helped thelaugher with site design, I'm the webmaster of the new solemaster.com with Joel, and I'm helping out with two new sites that are in the works with members of the community. Hey, I get free access and I'm happy, what can I say? Well, here's a new site that I put together from all of my celebrity feet pics(80,000). It would take months to get through them all. I've still got some work to do, but the site is open for business. To celebrate, I'm opening the site for free!!! I'm not sure how long I can keep it free, probably only a few days, but we'll see how hard we get hit.

The site looks great, Steve! Where did you ever find so many pics?! lol If you do end up charging, will it be similar to ET in price? I know Drew will want to see every pic and I don't want to just fly through and save them before any charge. You've done the work and deserve whatever compensation is necessary to cover it if you decide you need to do that.

Trust me I'm no stranger to exessive bandwidth usage 🙂 The reason it was crashing had to do with the CPU usage of the server. I had all of these great pictures, but no way to organize them, so I wrote a script that would create thumbnails automatically. As members browse through the archive, it creates a thumbnail if one doesn't already exist. It went crazy making thumbnails and trying to keep up with the demand. I figured it wouldn't be a problem with a growing site, and it won't, but that was a shock to the system!

Lord knows I don't have the patience to make 80,000 thumbnails hahaha

Heya Steve! Perusing your page, I noticed that many (all?) pictures came through as *.BMP format. Is that wanted? Converting them to .*JPG or similar formats would cut down on the server load big time. Though I suppose it's impossible to write a script that automatically converts file formats (if it's not impossible, please tell me how to do it 🙂) and you probably don't want to convert 80k images by hand... But where on earth did you find all those *.BMP's? I'd have wagered the format more or less gone from the web by now 😉

Ann, Tracy has a small celeb feet site up with guys and ladies....in separate catagories by actor/actress.....email her and she will send you the link.....

Hey Marauder! If they try to save as .bmp's it's your browser, not the site. They are all jpegs. The script used imagemagick to do the converting, so it can do just about anything you'd need other than gif. Yes, it was a pain to write. The cool thing is that there is only one file. As people spider through the site, the index file copies itself into any recursive folders, therefore spiderng the whole site in time. If I alter the first index file, it updates the site automatically as people roam if I wanted to, say, put a link at the top of each page etc..
