So, I was reading through the thread, and on page 3, someone named OhioPaddy makes this statement. To wit:
Tickling the soles of the feet was a common torture used on young women in Chinese harems. If the 14 YO girl sold to the master didn't want to sleep with him, she'd be put in stocks and have her feet tickled until she became more "amorous." This is something to remember if your GF objects to your tickling her feet.

Is there any historical precedent for this claim, or is the guy just talking out the proverbial arse?
 
Okay, no one's commented on this, most probably due to the age-thing. So, throw that out of the equation, it's not my concern. The points that have me curious are:
Did they even have "harems" in ancient China? I suppose the fellow meant "concubines".
and-
Did they have "stocks" as we think of them in ancient China?

It's entirely possible that OhioPaddy was indeed referring to some ancient practices. I'm just wondering if anyone can direct me to an actual, verified source for these claims.
 
Possibly, possibly not, Knox. The ancient Chinese seemed to have a reverence for feet that went beyond the practice of foot-binding and what-not. Considering the detailed knowledge of accupuncture and pressure-points that lie on the soles of the feet, it seems a logical leap to assume they'd have had some knowledge of tickling, too. :feets:
 
Well....I don't have actual proof in hand. But I have heard that in many ancient cultures tickling was used frequently as a means of torture...especially of the Chinese and Russian. It's even been in use as recent as Catherine the Great of Russia. She was known to have, not only people tickle her to become more amorous but she's also known to have tickled her maids into submission.

Actually, I've heard similar stories about those randy Ruskies! I'd love to tickle the Danube outta Anna Kournikova!

I don't recall running across any explicit accounts of Chinese tickle-tortures in my readings of rare, voluminous journals here at the labs, but I HAVE read that they had perfected the "art" of torture centuries before Europeans discovered the benefits of rudimentary concepts like bathing...
 
TICKLING WAS A COMMON PRACTICE TO GET PEOPLE TO DO THINGS OR A FORM OF PUNISHMENT. IN FACT SOME EXECUTIONS WERE DONE BY TICKLING. THAT IS WHERE ( BELIEVE IT OR NOT ) THE TERM TICKLED TO DEATH COMES FROM. DID NOT MEAN TO TAKE YOUR TERM TTD BUT IT IS THE TRUTH. IF I AM NOT MISTAKEN IF YOU STOLE OR BROKE A LAW IN THOSE DAYS THAT WAS DEFINATELY ONE OF THE FORMS OF PUNISHMENT. I MEAN THERE WAS HANGS AND STONING ( OUCH ) OR CUTTING OFF FINGERS AND LIMBS AND OF COURSE TICKLING. FACT YOU CAN LOOK IT UP.
 
Usually, The Straight Dope column by Cecil Atkins is as good a place as any for the real poop on a subject, but in this classic case, even HE seems abit stymied by us. :idunno:

Yeah, I know about this. And all this was started by some crackpot.

What kind of society would make one half of its population to submit to a lifetime of such pain? But then, female genital mutilation in Africa dwarfs this, I guess.
 
Well, in defense of the Chinese, they ended the practice of foot-binding centiries ago, while we "more enlightened" Westerners are still quite pleased to see our women hobbled by these.

I have heard rumors about tickling being used as torture in ancient societies, and the best I can figure these are just rumors. I heard about the Chinese, the Germans during WWII, the Romans, and Catherine the Great; so I investigated and read numerous books on these subjects. I could not find one legitamate source that mentions tickling as an actual method of torture. Now I did find sources that did mention about salt being placed on the soles of people's feet in order to have wild animals lick them. After further investigation, however, this turned out not to be some form of tickle torture. The tongues of these animals were rough and after a few licks they would start stripping the skin off the foot, and it was actually quite painful and not ticklish.
