I truly loved this film. Russell Crowe can do no wrong in my eyes every since I saw him in Romper Stomper. As usual, he brings his a-game and plays this poor Irish dockwork from New Jersey to perfection.
I like how the depression was translated onto the screen in the film. Ron Howard make it very dark and bleak. Braddock (Crowe) struggles to feed his family and needs to fight to make a living, but his left hand just isn't strong enough to make him great. He basically becomes a journeyman fighter until he strengthens his left hand working on the docks. He gets one last chance for a fight and wins. I don't want to give away too much, but the film was done right. The fight scenes weren't as over-the-top as Raging Bull, and I kind of liked that. I'm told that the fights weren't great to begin with, just old-school fights with mean intentions.
Craig Bierko plays Braddock's nemesis, Max Baer. He plays the character as a showboat ladies' man. His charm is palpable and you can't help but laugh at his antics in the film. GREAT JOB.
Renee Zellweger is really good in the film, but she's not given all too much to do.
My favorite scene in the film is when she enters the Church to pray for her husband, and find the entire neighborhood already there....very touching.
