WOW! I just took a look at our membership count and nearly fell off my chair! I remember not too long ago we were celebrating 5,000 members, and then 6,000 members. And now, we're nearing a phenomenal milestone.

I'll save the congrats for when it actually happens, but if folks keep joining with the frequency they have been, it should happen by the end of this weekend.

Keep your heads up, folks, and watch our community grow! 😀 😀 😀

Wow! that's great, Mimi! I remember when I joined back in 2001, I thought there was a lot of people. We just keep growing. Maybe we're not as off-key as we think??😀

We are EVERYWHERE!

Our numbers are Legion! Yield unto us, or face the consequences! (hmmm... need some menacing, martial music in the background, like a ticklish Imperial March)

Dum da da dum he heheh he he....🙂

That is amazing, I too have been around since this little board ( 🙄 )came into existence.

TMF would not be here today if not for Myriads and the other mods who keep this place a civil, ticklish place to visit!

Hmmm....10,000 people...and those are the MEMBERS, that is not counting those who simply browse the tickle floor, but don't touch😉

this is really cool. good news. im happy for jeff and the community that memberships keep going up.

i have a question. i've noticed the the board has not had a "record number of people online at the same time" in nearly a full year!

with member id's always growing, what do you attribute the this stat too? it would seem that the more and more people signed up, then it would go hand in hand with regular breaking of "same time online" records.

im stumped.
anyone?

Hey, I've got a Metallica version of the Imperial March around here somewhere that'd do for the backing, anyone got a good laugh track? 😀

Doesn't the record number of users thing also include guest viewers? That'd kind of explain why while membership goes up, we haven't broken more than a thousand and a bit on-line at any one time. Also, and I'm guessing now based on post activity levels and time, there seems to be a lot more people here from different countries than there was a year ago, so while the membership (and probably average level of visitors) has gone up, the all-time record hasn't. Just a guess obviously but the best I can come up with.

Partial explanations (of why we have more members than ever, but the record number online of 1055 was set in December of 2002):

1)There was a time when one could enter the chat room without being a registered member. That was changed. Many lurkers, who read threads and chatted but were not registered, were obliged to become members. That swelled the membership total but didn't change the number of people online.

2)We accumulate members who become inactive, and never remove them from the list. Thus the number of members who are never online here just keeps going up.

As a hypothetical example, somebody who joined in July 2001, posted 20 or 25 times in two months, and hasn't been back to TMF since October 2001, is still listed among the 9900+ members.

A real example: Mistress Kassandra registered here under the screenname Kassandra on February 19, 2003, just in order to post comments on two of my stories (one of which she was in). Those are the only two posts she has ever made, and, as far as I know, she is never online here. She is among our 9900+ listed members.

PS I see no reason to remove inactive members; they are clearly welcome to come back when they want to.

hmmm.
im still confused and i'm sure its my fault. im not much for math or percentages. 🙁
but to try and help myself understand this better i brought the numbers down lower to what i could understand better.

lets say three years ago 5 people joined as members to the tmf. and one night 2 of them were on at the same time, another night 3 of them, and one night 4 out of 5 were on at the same time! (and it was a new record)

then lets say 5 more people joined, making the total member count at 10 members. but for over a year no more than 4 members were ever online at the same time.

this is where im stumped. common sense would indicate that if the record was 4 (with only 5 members joined), then certainly the record would, should, at some point during a whole year, exceed 4 with (10) members joined up.

someone mentioned that more people from different countries are joining, but i'm not sure how that would affect this stat in a negative way.

help me understand this! 🙂

What milagros was trying to explain in larger terms was basically this:

You have 5 original members of the TMF, who one night set a record of 4 members online at once. Over time, 5 more join, yet now with 10 members there are never more than 4 online at once. This is most likely because, of the original 5, only 2 of them visit the TMF regularly these days. The other 3 have gotten wrapped up in car pools and PTA meetings and neighborhood bake sales. They may have forgotten about their membership at the TMF, or simply do not have the time to stop by much anymore. So that would technically leave 7 ACTIVE members of the 10 total members of the TMF. And of those 7, 3 have day jobs, leaving them to frequent the TMF more often in the evenings. 2 work the night shift, and like to come online when they get home from work in the mornings. The other two are a married couple who flip burgers at Mickey Dee's by day, and moonlight as lounge singers in the evening, making the wee hours of the morning their prime net brousing time.

So when you consider those who are registered at the TMF, but no longer have time to really visit anymore, and take into consideration the different schedules and time zones of active members, it's easy to see how we have not yet broken our most people online record for the last year.

I probably just confused you more than you were to begin with, didn't I? 😀

Yes, that's great! I'd like to see as many people come out of the "tickle closet" as possible. That way, maybe tickling will not be considered such a deviant interest. It seems to me like the various localities are being better represented than they have been in the past. That's great too. I always suspected that there were ticklephiles right under my nose.

I hope the TMF gets a million members! Can it hold that many?

Records....

Why new ones are not happening is simple.

We average about 500 people on forum at all times. Less in the early hours more at night. On busy days we push towards the 800 range. This is a touch more then last year when we avereged in the 400's. There is quiet growth.

This is the sum of people viewing the forum who are registered and not registered.

As we have added registered members they came from somewhere, That pool of browsing unregistered people. So the same group is still looking, only a few have changed classes in it by getting a name.

Also. There are other places to surf now. Tickle Theater has an average of a 100 people on it at most times. There is Jim's UK forum, and one or two others. All siphon off some people so hitting records becomes harder. Same pie, it has a few more takers now.

But looking at my stats we continue to grow in use. Odds are next year we'll average in the high 500's at most times. So a small flow of new folks continues to arive on our shore each year. 🙂

Also that user record was set on a day when big snowstorms happend in the Eastern US, I think. Lots of people inside with nothing to do!

Search me man, found it while, ummm, looking for a reference work on programming in C++ on an FTP server *cough* and nabbed it. Of course I can't conclusivley prove it IS metallica, but it damn sure sounds like 'em. It's only 500k, you want me to chuck you a link for it?

Actually, if I get time tomorrow I'll see about doing stick a tickle track over the top, see what it sounds like.
