I got recommended to download an antiviral program called Immunet Protect and i'm told it works on some sort of cloud mechanism that allows for less memory to be used.

Can anyone explain this concept in laymen terms? Is this kind of protection sufficient?

Basically your PC uses a small piece of "client" software that connects to a series of servers, the "cloud", via a broadband connection. All the work is done on the much faster cloud servers so your 10 year old PC (example) doesn't take hours to do what the cloud can do in minutes.

So far the jury is out on how well it works. I'm sure at some point there will be a lot of cloud based programming. Personally I don't like anything that is dependent on an internet connection at all times.

Oh and Immunet is not a good antivirus on it's own. It's designed to work alongside your existing antivirus. If you want an actual cloud based A/V you may want to look at Panda as mentioned in the article.
