Cocain played a role in the death of Billy Mayes

well that is there job grated not all of them are helpful........(is helpful spelled right?)

Show me an addict that is forced to be 'dried out' that doesn't want to be, and I'll show you a person that goes back to their drug of choice the first chance they get. To think anything else is foolish and naive unless you've been there or helped others through it.

I agree completely, based on unfortunate personal experience.

Well, then how is it that if you said the most reasonable things to a person before they went to see a psychologist but the person still doesn't understand then, the minute they walk out of that doctor's office they get it,problem solved.Just disappeared in a one hour session. To me this is just amazing. It happened to me before.Everyone sat there and talked to my Mom for hours. She still could not stand up to her ex husband but the minute she stepped out of the doctor's office she was strong. They are doing something, they learned some kind of magic word to say that somehow flips some switch in a person's brain because we weren't talking gibberish to her.

There is no magic word. People who have issues don't just go to a psychologist for one session and they're cured. They go for weeks and weeks to get better. I have PTSD from growing up in an abusive household and I had to go to therapy for years to get to the point I'm at now. They may help you better understand a specific stressful circumstance in your life, help you see the situation from another point of view, and thus deal with it in a way that is healthy and so on.

But they don't have "magic" words. This concept is pretty damn naive.

Also, there are people who will hear the same advice from multiple people, but not trust it until it's said by a "professional."

Does having family and friends around for support help convince addicts to quit? That's always been my belief.

It can, but drugs will affect your attitude more often than not. Especially powerful ones like cocaine and heroin. From the perspective of an addict: heroin/cocaine makes one feel like a god. Your family wants to rip you AWAY from that!? Blasphemy!

Like everyone says. If you don't want help, people cannot force it upon you until you're incapable (as in, diagnosed to be mentally ill or incapacitated) of making decisions.

Projecting your own experiences on the rest of humanity and expecting them to conform is the very essence of naivete.

Rox: Support from family and friends often breaks down the walls to help the addict see what the drug/activity is doing to them and those around them. It is also essential to have that accountability and support as the life-long recovery occurs.

QBBM: The counselor didn't have some magic word or phrase to wake her up. What happened is that either the counselor validated what she saw was happening, awakened her to the truth of what was going on, or she woke herself up and chose to combat/fight/resist the problem rather than avoid/empower/become co-dependent in.
