Good evening sports fans.

I have been trying to strike up discussion with regards to what in the name of Bear Bryant is going on in college football. I have been trying to make heads or tails as to what's happening and why. However, being in the realm of 24-hr news results in information overload, and frankly, most of the information is useless, trite and often repetitive.

Personally, to channel Bobby Bowden, I believe the whole thing to be a dag gum tragedy. Sadly, all this crap is happening for the wrong reason . . . evil, filthy, putrid greed. Were it to happen for the sake of competition and sportsmanship, that be fine and dandy. I think it will be a mess. I frankly do not like what is developing, and there's a possibility I am missing something crucial to this discussion.

What I would like to know is: W T F. Why the Big 12? How can the Big 12, easily the most competitive conference outside the SEC (Geaux Tigers!), be marauded for flesh and left to fester and suffer a brutal death? I honestly cannot figure out why. I mean, how can a collection of storied programs like Texas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, and their respective rivals not make for a strong confederation.

All I can fathom is either discrepancies in competition or discrepancies in MONEY. And I don't know if the Big 12 even bothered to address this or not . . . but the point remains, the state of affairs as it is would rather destroy tradition and integrity for the sake of money.

Personally, I would prefer a more fractionated NCAA. Not expansion, but diminution. Think about this - instead of a few "mega-conferences" that will result in nothing short of a clusterfuck, especially when it comes to scheduling; imagine multiple smaller conferences. That way, you would have fewer mandatory inter-conference games (ideally involving traditional rivalries), leaving room to schedule more higher quality non-conference opponents (which we have been seeing more of lately).

In the end, you would see unique match-ups not currently seen today. And you would have multiple conference champions and maybe some at-large berths to make way for a tournament. And I think there would be money to be made there.

I don't know - I am a huge fan of college football, and I have seen change before. However, never to this degree and certainly not for the sake of lining greedy pockets. I would like to hear other opinions. Thanks.
