I just read that the Colorado Rockies have signed lefthander Jamie Moyer, who most recently pitched for the Philadelphia Phillies, to a contract. Moyer just turned 49 this past November!
The article stated that Hoyt Wilheim pitched in the major leagues for the Dodgers at age 49 in
1972.
Hall Of Famer Phil Niekro pitched his last big league game, for my Braves.. at age 48.. in September 1987.
I would say that in spite of his age, and his lengthy layoff from baseball, Moyer would have a good chance to make a comeback. However, he may have made a mistake by signing with the Rockies. For a pitcher to play half his games in the thin Denver air.. may not be a smart move, especially for a 49 year old pitcher making a comeback.
Moyer has been a durable pitcher with a very long career. I wish him well on his comeback.
Thoughts on Moyer, and this move?
