Commission Requests

I've recently commissioned a few art works from certain artists, and I feel like I'm just not doing a great job of communicating what I want and how I want it. Now don't get me wrong, the finished products have come out wonderfully, but I feel like the whole process might have been a bit too complicated.

Here's my actual question, for artists that take requests and commissions: Is there a specific way that y'all want to do things? Like, do you want as many details and specifics as possible, or would you prefer something more brief? And is there anything else that you like/dislike when doing a request/commission?

I realize this varies from artist to artist, but any feedback would be greatly appreciated. I just want to gain some insight as to how I can help make the entire process smoother.
