Congratulations to Alex Wood!
With yesterday's seven shutout innings in the Dodgers' 1-0 victory, Wood became the first Dodger starting pitcher in over sixty years to start the year with ten victories and zero losses.
The announcers challenged the audience to name the last Dodger starting pitcher to begin the season 10-0, and I said, "Don Newcombe, 1956."
I was correct about the pitcher but wrong about the year. 1956 was the year that "Big Newk" won 27 games, his highest total ever, but it was a year earlier, in 1955, that he began the year with ten wins. In 1955 he was a mere 20-5.
So why isn't Alex Wood selected to be in the All-Star game?
That can still be corrected if a replacement pitcher is needed.
