Congratulations to the Pistons on a truly amazing season. Iam thrilled for them, their organization, and their coach, Larry Brown, who has been in the NBA seemingly forever, and finally has a title. I liked him when he was coach of the Sixers.
I express my regrets to my good friend Kurch. Being a fan of the seemingly always bridesmaids Atlanta Braves, I know all too well the disappointment of losing the championship round. In a way, I think it was a good thing for Phil Jackson to experience loss in the NBA finals, after being nine for nine in his finals appearances as a coach. The man has done a brilliant job in his career, winning so many titles in two different cities, with a lot of help from Michael and Scottie in Chicago, and now Shaq and Kobe in LA. In a way, this finals was almost a bit like the World Series of 2001, where the Yankees had won so many times, it almost seemed that it was time for them to lose that series, as perhaps it was with the Lakers in this series. I know it's possible that the Lakers will not be the same in 2004-2005, as they may well lose some players over the summer. If Shaq and Kobe stay in LA with Jackson, and stay healthy, I think the Lakers will have a shot to win it again next year. In the meantime, go and celebrate, Detroit. Your basketball team has brought you a hard fought and very well deserved title.
