Okay, it's pretty clear that Randy "The Natural" Couture defending the UFC Heavyweight belt against WWE vet and NCAA Champ Brock Lesnar on November 15th is going to be the biggest Heavyweight fight since maybe ever.

All the analysts and reporters in MMA can't stop talking about it, and who can blame them. It's huge. It's literally the crafty veteran vs. the hotshot rookie. It promises to be good, but for a lot of different reasons.

Couture has always won against the odds for two reasons: he's quick and he's got phenomenal wrestling as a base for his MMA. He still has those things, but there's a problem. Lesnar has more of the same. He's quicker and a better wrestler than Couture. To say nothing of the height, weight, size, strength and youth advantages he has.

Still Couture has done this before. Nobody thought he could possibly beat Chuck Liddell, Tito Ortiz, Tim Sylvia or Gabriel Gonzaga. Couture beat them all and in many cases, made it look easy.

One analyst put it very well. Lesnar has the advantage of size, strength, height, weight, speed, age and wrestling ability. Randy Couture has the advantage of being Randy Couture. 😀

I thought I'd try something different since SO MANY things can happen in this fight...

RANDY COUTURE WILL WIN IF:
He keeps it standing and waits for Lesnar to make a critical mistake. Lesnar, big and strong as he is, is still very much a rookie. His submission defence was almost absent during the Frank Mir fight. Couture will also have a huge advantage in the stand up. Couture standing might be enough to frustrate Lesnar into making a mistake. And with Randy Couture, one mistake can mean a victory.

BROCK LESNAR WILL WIN IF:
He can get on top of Couture and stay there. As with the fight against Heath Herring, and the first 80 seconds of the Frank Mir fight, Lesnar is a monster once you're on your back. He's just too big and too strong for anyone to hold out for a very long time. Couture's a really smart guy and might be able to ride it out for a little while, but Lesnar on top with enough time can decimate anyone.

Looking forward to other comments and hype about this. See you Nov. 15th!

I'm definately looking forward to this fight but it's kind of hard to break down.

Couture hasn't had a fight in over a year so it's hard to know where his game is at.I'm sure he has stayed active to some degree over the lay off.On the other hand,so little is known about Lesnar's game and real depth of his abilities.

I believe Randy's best chance of winning will be for him to be on top of Lesnar. His striking is good but I don't know if he wants to take the chance of getting hit by Lesnar.Randy was able to stand and trade with Big Tim but Tim was way more vulnerable to Randy's wrestling thus making him much more hesitant.Too little is known about Lesnars striking skills but he defianatly has big power.I'm going out on a limb and saying if Couture wins it will be via submission.

Snail,I agree about Lesnar's best way to win being to get top control and deliver a viscious gnp. That dude is a beast on top.

One thing is for sure, whoever wins this fight will most likely be losing to Big Nog sometime in the future.I would just rather see Randy fight Nog because I have been wanting to see that fight for a while. Two very similar skill sets, about the same level striking, great grapplers, huge hearts but I don't see any way for Randy to win.

Kinda off topic but how pysched are you for Penn/GSP 2?That's about as good a fight that could ever be put together.

everything that i could say has been said....

if randy wins it will be by tko or dec. his last sub was years ago against a meh van Arsdale.

brock will have to stop randy to win cause i just don't think he will have the gas tank to go 5 rds unless he just lays on him.

personally i don't think randy will win but also didnt think he would win his last 2 fights so...

fuck it

Natural - I'm so NOT predicting a winner for this. There are so many ways this could turn out, it's sick. If Lesnar wins, it'll be by TKO. If Couture wins, it could be ANY way possible. :wowzer:

Ryan - GSP/Penn 2's been signed already? I was under the impression that GSP got Thiago Alves next and Penn got the winner of the Florian/Stevenson fight on the 15th. 😕

Curt - Couture could win it by choke. Lesnar's submission defense is still less-than-stellar. Like I said, Couture can win this in just about any way you can think of.

I believe Curt is right with the Jan 31 date,I thought I remember Dana saying that is was gonna be Superbowl weekend. The Fedor/Arlovski fight is big but Penn/GSP 2 eclipses that IMO.There are a couple interviews floating around of the fighters talking about the bout.

As far as the Couture fight I could see Randy on top gnp Lesnar and Brock trying to defend and Randy snatching an arm.I just think that Randy is gonna have to pull out some tricks in this fight if he wants to win.I don't see him muscling his way to a victory but with him you never know.

Because of Lesnar's superior wrestling skills, he could also win by submission...so he is doubly dangerous

see ya tomorrow Snail

Wanna know how close this fight is?

The officialy betting odds on this fight are:

Randy Couture: -105
Brock Lesnar: -125

They're giving odds that both men are favoured to win, with a VERY slight advantage to Lesnar. I can't wait for Saturday night! 😀

It's tonight! See you at cage-side.

I know I've put this off, but I'm going to officially call:
RANDY COUTURE WINS BY SUBMISSION

(followed closely by LESNAR BY TKO)

I've just read the play by play on Sherdog and I can't believe it.Please tell me it's not true.I haven't seen the the fight yet but f**k.You got guys like Arlovski,Barnett, etc and Lesnar ends up with the UFC belt..No disrespect to Lesnar but there are guys much more deserving of the title.

At the same time much respect to Brock for stepping up to the challenge.I hope Big Nog smokes Mir and then dispatches of Lesnar. As for now,I'm going to try to find the fight online.Peace. :mhorns:

i thought it was a very good fight for both

Randy showed he still has it and Brock showed he can hang

Wild congrats to Brock Lesnar. His standup/clinch is very much improved and he is deserving of the belt.

Amazed at how Lesnar won so quickly....his wrestling skills are second to nobody, and now he can beat you to submission...nobody is gonna take that belt from him anytime soon

Here is to a long reign from Lesnar:mhorns:

Lesnar won by TKO, not submission.
With their BJJ skills, Nogueira and Mir (who already beat Lesnar fair & square) can be major threats.

Lesnar has a lot of work to do. Its sad that after 4 minutes in round 1 he was running out of steam. His second take down attempt was incredibly slow and sloppy in comparison to his lightning fast first attempt. Randy easily defended himself.
Randy's loss was due to his underestimation of Lesnar's stand up. Randy practically had a full tank in round 2 but he got cocky. Lesnar was on "E". Lesnar's 6+ inch reach (over Randy's) was his greatest asset. He tagged Couture several times during the match. That should have been an indication to Randy to attempt a take down NOT box him. Anyways in the end Randy lost the same way he lost to Liddell, by stand up. Randy can pretty much out wrestle almost anyone in UFC but needs to be careful when trying to out box someone who has him on reach.

I agree with you on almost everything except that Lesnar has far better wrestling skills that anyone on the roster, so if he works on his striking, he is lethal

Lesnar was out of gas. Couture had a nice plan but was just overwhelmed.

I respect Lesnar's physical strength and amateur wrestling background. He looks like an unrefined diamond that needs to be polished. But I bet he wouldn't get this title shot if he was at WWE in the past.
