Okay, it's pretty clear that Randy "The Natural" Couture defending the UFC Heavyweight belt against WWE vet and NCAA Champ Brock Lesnar on November 15th is going to be the biggest Heavyweight fight since maybe ever.
All the analysts and reporters in MMA can't stop talking about it, and who can blame them. It's huge. It's literally the crafty veteran vs. the hotshot rookie. It promises to be good, but for a lot of different reasons.
Couture has always won against the odds for two reasons: he's quick and he's got phenomenal wrestling as a base for his MMA. He still has those things, but there's a problem. Lesnar has more of the same. He's quicker and a better wrestler than Couture. To say nothing of the height, weight, size, strength and youth advantages he has.
Still Couture has done this before. Nobody thought he could possibly beat Chuck Liddell, Tito Ortiz, Tim Sylvia or Gabriel Gonzaga. Couture beat them all and in many cases, made it look easy.
One analyst put it very well. Lesnar has the advantage of size, strength, height, weight, speed, age and wrestling ability. Randy Couture has the advantage of being Randy Couture. 😀
I thought I'd try something different since SO MANY things can happen in this fight...
RANDY COUTURE WILL WIN IF:
He keeps it standing and waits for Lesnar to make a critical mistake. Lesnar, big and strong as he is, is still very much a rookie. His submission defence was almost absent during the Frank Mir fight. Couture will also have a huge advantage in the stand up. Couture standing might be enough to frustrate Lesnar into making a mistake. And with Randy Couture, one mistake can mean a victory.
BROCK LESNAR WILL WIN IF:
He can get on top of Couture and stay there. As with the fight against Heath Herring, and the first 80 seconds of the Frank Mir fight, Lesnar is a monster once you're on your back. He's just too big and too strong for anyone to hold out for a very long time. Couture's a really smart guy and might be able to ride it out for a little while, but Lesnar on top with enough time can decimate anyone.
Looking forward to other comments and hype about this. See you Nov. 15th!
