There's a rather annoying food trend here in Germany presently: An increasing amount of food products are "refined" with cream, be it frozen vegetables, heat-and-eat-meals, pasta sauces, stews etc. Even canned food which used to be without cream is suddenly laced with the white stuff.

That's okay as long as you like cream. But for me, it's getting harder to find things I can buy, because I can't digest dairy products: my body can't produce the necessary enzymes. Whenever I happen to eat cream-containing food by accident, I'm in a terrible hurry to find the nearest toilet... 🙄 And as far as I know, several milion people have the same problem.

I have observed this trend starting in restaurants over the past few years, but at least I was able to buy most food in the supermarket without getting "harrassed by cream". People used to have the choice to add cream on their own, or not to add it. Now this freedom of choice becomes narrower every week!

Most original Italian, Indian, or French recipes are without cream, nevertheless more than two thirds of the dishes in such restaurants come with cream now. 😡

What about the USA or other parts of the world? Is there a similar trend?

Very interesting observation, Hal. I can't say that I've noticed any increase in cream. I'm trying to avoid carbohydrates myself, and I've noticed that virtually every flavor of Campbell's chunky soups are loaded with potatoes. But cream? That doesn't seem like the kind of food that would be attractive to people. My only use for it is in coffee.

Ahh, HAL you can probably blame EU for that one!
With all the nations in Europe coming together the highest "quailty" standard are taken so that no nation is missed...however this is killing the French cheese makers who may not have the highest sanitary tanks because they use special tanks to curde the cheese...well if they get the high quality tanks it changes the taste and originality of the cheese.
My point is that there is probably something in EU that has made adding cream a "benefit" to 'everyones' health...
Just a thought...

But no, in the US, cream has not been added to many products...other than soups and coffee and maybe deserts.
