Does anyone recognize a certain scientist named Gordon Freeman? The guy spent years studying at MIT, becoming a world-renowned expert at pushing carts and pressing buttons… only to screw it all up by doing what he supposedly knew how to do best, and during an experiment end up opening a series of portals between our world and another—along with the subsequent invasion of our world by an alien force coming through those portals.
For those of you who don’t get the reference, that’s basically the story of the video game Half-Life. And what you’re seeing here is what happens when everything I just described happens in reverse: someone in another universe screws up their portal experiment—either by pushing the cart with a bit too much enthusiasm, or by pressing the button without enough force—and this all leads to the accidental opening of a portal between their world and ours. A portal through which, from our side, starts coming what for them would be “a massive biological entity trying to force its way into their world, which they can barely contain”…
I’d already explored a similar setting a couple of times, and interestingly enough, both times there were people who asked me to show what’s on the other side of the portal—on the side the feet are coming from. Well… I would’ve loved to have the resources to adapt something similar to the portals in Stranger Things, which would’ve looked spectacular, but lacking the means—for now—I had to make do with what I had on hand. 😅
