Cure for AIDS...found....

It's good progress, but we're far from finding something practical to use.

The problem is that there's no money to be made in a cure for anything. :disgust:

The problem is stuff is really fucking hard to cure. We've yet to cure the common cold, and that's a much simpler virus than HIV. Don't even get my started on all the different forms of cancer and their various causes.

There's a lot of good people working hard on this stuff, and assuming they're all just some faceless pharmaceutical company trying to squeeze more money out of people isn't very encouraging.

There are also non-profit organizations and academia/universities that also work just as hard as private pharmaceutical companies.

Sadly, that is true. When you cure somebody of a disease, then a doctor loses a customer. So it's more profitable for them to sell you drugs that offer relief from the symptoms, then cure the disease itself.

That may not always be the case...

Don't forget about health insurance companies(public or private); because it's them picking up the tab after the deductible is paid by the patient. If the doctor is defrauding the insurance company, there will be hell to pay. Not to mention malpractice lawsuits from the patients.

Yeah, I'll give you that. Viruses mutate so much, they're like Rowdy Roddy Piper. Just when we thought we had the answers, they start changing the questions. I also remember reading that there's a shortage of students seeking science majors, which I imagine doesn't help, either. That was pretty ignorant of me to lash out, like that (especially when one quick Google search gave me enough information to refute my statement! ). It just makes me angry that with all the advances in technology, people are still dying from things like this, and it's not just diseases. I mean, I've got a phone that can play music, show me full movies in HD, and tell me what the weather's gonna be like, but God help me if a tornado hits my house, because there's nothing I can do about that, and it pisses me off. Lately I've been getting pissed about people--me, or others, getting screwed over, hurt, or killed, and not being able to do anything about it. I'd really like to see some results of a breakthrough of some sort. I've heard about this guy getting the bone marrow transplant, and having any evidence of HIV gone from his system, and that's awesome, even if his operation was the equivalent of a complete overhaul. It's a baby-step, and better than any of the other BS news headlines I've heard about over the years for potential "cures" to be tested. I think it'll be awesome to see the next major vaccine or cure that's discovered, or ways to make buildings tornado and earthquake resistant... something. I dunno... it's late. :zzzzz:

I doubt a full fledged cure will ever be released to the public. Like others have said, doctors would lose customers, their would be a loss of money since people would no longer need to pay for treatment. They find cures for colds, flu, whatever, their won't be a need for pharmacies anymore or any type of medication. Maybe something would come out eventually but would be extremely expensive and risky. No win/win situation with this stuff.

All this talk reminds me of a storyline that was in the Squadron Supreme. One of the characters, Tom Thumb, finds out he has cancer. In desperation, he uses a time machine and goes into the far future to steal a "cure" from their longtime enemy the time traveling conquorer the Scarlet Centurion. All goes according to plan.

Unfortunately, when Tom returns home and gets to examine "the cure", he discovers that it's nothing more than penicilan and some vitamins. Due to centuries of eugenics and various medical discoveries, thats all people need in the future. D'oh!

Then he died.

My nerdy point being, stuff like AIDS and cancer may very well be cured in time. Heck, it wasn't that long ago when leprosy was a big deal! How about the Black Plague? That killed off up to 60% of Europes population and took them 150 years to recover from! Cures are found all the time to all sorts of things. AIDS and cancer may not be cured in our lifetime, but I think they will be, eventually.

And doctors will always be needed! People will always need somewhere to go to fix broken bones, or to take their kids when they suffer a fall, etc. I try not to buy into the paranoid thinking about hidden cures.

There is actually a potential shortage of doctors in the U.S., and even if we found a cure for these things, people would still need to go in and get tested/treated at least once for the cure itself. I really don't think most doctors would complain if they lost some customers tomorrow because a cure for HIV, cancer, and the common cold were all found overnight.

Also, pharmaceutical companies are not completely reliant on incurable diseases to make money. They still produce antibiotics and other drugs that are used to treat completely curable conditions. Strep throat, STIs, bronchitis are all profitable even though they are curable, and HIV and cancer would be the same way.

Not to mention, no pharmaceutical CEO is planning on keeping their company rich fifty years from now after he's retired. If you're looking for monetary motive as well, whichever company comes up with an effective cure is going to be fucking rich. No man or woman is going to hold back on that in the hopes that every other company does the same so that there are more sick people for the company after he or she has retired.

I am really honestly disappointed with all the professional healthcare hate going on here. I understand that insurance is fucked up right now, but that doesn't mean there is a conspiracy where everybody working in or near healthcare is out to create a world where people get sick for profit.
