Do things that interest you, go to places where you're more likely to meet women who share your interests. If you have a problem in the 'looks' department, try going for a makeover. It doesn't need to cost much and stylists are more than happy to help you. Women tend to be less superficial than men when it comes to looks. They'd rather be out with a funny, confident guy than some handsome "himbo" who only wants to talk about himself.
Many years ago I went on a date. I was shy and awkward and had very low self esteem.I put on an act to try to impress her. The lady saw through my "disguise" and said, quite bluntly, "You think you're smarter than you really are." Ouch!
Be yourself. Love yourself... that's the only way you'll get anybody to love you, too. No one likes to be in the company of a 'sad sack'. Again, I speak from experience. I have more women friends now than ever before. Learn to love that person you see in your mirror each day.
