With the invention of the DVR (or TiVo) came a few really nice perks: Being able to fast forward through repetitive (and often annoying) commercials while watching taped shows. Being able to pause TV so as not to miss anything during a phone call or bathroom break. No more missing your favorite TV shows/movies because of schedule conflicts. And the best perk I've come to appreciate is the ability to replay mainstream tickle scenes over and over again! 😀

Before this invention, I had to lie in wait for my favorite tickle scenes to come up in movies or TV shows, and enjoy the fleeting few seconds that it lasted up on the screen.... silently cursing that it was never long enough. Or worse, I waited the length of the whole movie/episode only to get to the magical tickling scene and have the phone ring or one of my kids fall down into weepy tears because they got hurt, needed attention, had nothing better to do than annoy me...etc. And then after all that anticipation I'm left feeling frustrated because I missed it! Then, as a last ditch attempt at happiness (okay, somewhat of an exaggeration), I have to turn to the internet to see if I can find the scene I'm looking for somewhere in the dusty archives of youtube (all the while grumbling about how miserably cruel the fates can be sometimes.) Or maybe a tickle scene comes up in a movie/show that I wasn't expecting, and before I've had the chance to really enjoy it or recuperate from my heart pounding and the butterflies in my stomach going beserk, it's over. And rather than being able to watch it again, I'm left to replay it in my mind instead.

Well no more! Now when I see a movie/show coming up on TV that I know has a good tickling scene in it, I simply record it and watch it whenever I want, and as many times as I want. Never before has a rewind button been used so much 😀 And if you're like me, you prefer to watch those scenes alone, not only because you don't want to have to explain to anyone why you're watching the same 20 second clip 47,000 times, but also because you get squirmy and uncomfortable while watching mainstream tickle scenes when other people are around. So now I can watch these scenes when it's convenient.... alone, at midnight, with the shade drawn and the lights out... maybe that's just me 🙂

All of this renewed appreciation for the DVR hit me while watching the movie "Blue Valentine" the other night. I had never seen the movie before, and overall, it was freakin' depressing as hell (essentially about the downward spiral of a couple, that ultimately leads to divorce). But I like Michelle Williams and LOVE Ryan Gosling, so I stuck with it. Then one scene came up of the two of them racing each other down the street, running backwards, being silly. Then they both tumble to the pavement, laughing. One of her dress buttons comes undone, and he says something along the lines of "what kind of operation are you running over here?" and rebuttons the button for her. Then he starts tickling her (here's where my heart started skipping a few beats). At first, the camera pulls in tight on her face, so all you see is her laughing hysterically, but then it pulls away and you can see his hands tickling her ribcage and underarms. As with most mainstream tickling scenes, it only lasted a few seconds. And initially, when the scene happened, my husband was in the room. But it was late and he had to get up early the next morning, so maybe 15-20 minutes after the tickling scene happened, he went up to bed. During that 15-20 minutes, I knew that the second he left the room, I was going to rewind back to that scene and play it, ad nauseam. I swear I must have watched it a dozen times - first focusing on him, then on her, then on his hands, then on her face, etc.... you get the idea.

And after reaching the point where even I was getting bored with the scene, I stopped the movie, turned off the TV, and smiled to myself. Then, after silently thanking whatever techno-geek had invented that little silver box on top of my TV, I went to bed the very picture of a satisfied tickle freak 😀 Though, despite fully satiating my tickle cravings, I still replayed the scene a dozen more times in my head as I drifted off to sleep that night..... some habits die hard, I guess.

Guess you missed the whole VHS thing.

LOL, no sadly I've been around long enough to have lived through the VHS age. But you can't compare the two - the DVR is SOOOO much better! For the little unexpected tickle scene surprises (like the one I mentioned in "Blue Valentine") the DVR works in ways the VCR never could. Unless you were someone who always had a VHS tape in the VCR, at the ready, with remote in hand, on the off chance a tickle scene should crop up to record, there is NO way you could expect to catch a scene you didn't know was coming - most scenes are over too quickly.

The VCR worked great when you knew something was coming on TV that you wanted to tape, but otherwise, kinda useless. The DVR takes all the stress of needing either good timing or REALLY good luck out of the equation. Gotta love technology 😀

Next discussion - the benefits of iPod playlists over mix-tapes.... and if you're not old enough to know what a "mix-tape" is, just stay out of the conversation 😉
