This is just another exercise in creative writing and a sort of expansion on the interviews I did some time ago.
A variation on the old Desert Island Discs format, but with two less songs and a particular theme for each piece chosen, which are;
Youthful Follies (a song which symbolised your childhood, or simply one of the earliest songs you remember liking)
Coming-of-Age (something you remember from those turbulent years, when hormones ruled).
Guilty Pleasures (self-explanatory. You like it, but feel you shouldn’t)
Let it All Hang Out (the song that gets you dancing more than any other, with friends and having a riot of a time)
The Other Side (perhaps a piece that symbolises a side of you that few people get to see)
The Here and Now (not necessary of now, but any piece that you find yourself listening to that reflects personality and interests in the present).
You can also bring a book, and as in the radio programme, the Complete Works of Shakespeare are already provided, along with the Bible or a philosophical work.
I've tried to choose what I think each character would actually like, not what I think they should like to please my own ego, which is a trap some writers fall into; Alan Bennett did so in The History Boys.
They were all born at least 5 years after me (‘86, ‘88 and ’89), so I have looked back over the noughties for some choices as that is when they were growing up, but they aren’t so limited as to keep to that spectrum.
I'd also welcome your own choices after posting the three sets of answers for Nina, Babs and Lucy. Each answer is a link, because I want them to be a surprise.
First up, Nina;
Youthful Follies; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bUIElvJRyNU
In her own words; ‘I think it’s because I loved Leonardo di Caprio, but it’s still a good song.
Coming-of-Age: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z-8i04AWPKI
In her own words ‘It just reminds me of the first summer I really started to grow up in Bournemouth’.
Guilty Pleasures: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k5NavOeOPIk
In her own words: ‘I’m so, so sorry! Hahaha… It was very different but very catchy and it came out when I sort of needed it’.
Let it All Hang Out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PWgvGjAhvIw
In her own words; ‘I’m not much of a dancer, but I’ve never seen anybody sitting down when this gets played… and you haven’t lived until you see Dominic Featherfinger moving to it’.
The Other Side; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xhauxpi2kaA
In her own words; ‘Not many of my friends understand that I can be a bit of oddball, and Dominic has brought that out a little more, so I’ve gone for a quirky little one here’.
The Here and Now; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jvYUfwMBCrU
In her own words: ‘There are hardly any artists this sensitive or vocally gifted nowadays. She’s from another age.’
Book: Virginia Woolf’s Orlando or Vladimir Nabokov’s Lolita
Next, Barbara;
Youthful Follies : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ro0FW9Qt-4
In her own words; ‘I couldn’t help it… If you were of that age at that time… No escape!’
Coming-of-Age: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WE8g415RvGw
In her own words: ‘I got to like Moby when I was at school and would get a few knocks for it. I loved this song back then, and only came to realise what ‘we are all made of Stars’ really meant when I watched Cosmos about ten years later’.
Guilty Pleasures: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SirQaNgkxBk
In her own words; *giggling*… ‘It’s the voice… I can’t help sing along to Tom’.
Let it All Hang Out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GOCX8BQHS1A
In her own words; ‘I hear this and I can’t help moving something… haha, I love it because he has a distinctly male voice, unlike so many other male artists, even if he looks a bit ropey, haha… joking.’
The Other Side: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YeawPUpTHJA
In her own words; ‘People really don’t see this side of me very often. It kind of lets people guess what I like. The strict machine can be a number of things, but ‘wonderful electric’?... hehmm’.
The Here and Now: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7sx0g3eh2Jw
In her own words; ‘I didn’t discover Daft Punk until fairly late on, but I really like their sound’
Book: Silent Spring, Rachel Carson
Finally, Lucy;
Youthful Follies: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FbWJVult-9M
In her own words; ‘I won’t apologise. This record made me want to dance and sing professionally, and those guys aren’t lady-boys like Justin Bieber and One Direction… they could’ve easily been cheeky scaffolders and hod-carriers.’
Coming-of-Age: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NiXbRBS5Z58
In her own words; It was nearly Black Eyed Peas, nearly Justin Trouser-snake, but this song dominated nearly everywhere I used to go for about four years, and I love it to this day.
Guilty Pleasures: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0HtyF0jux2Q
In her own words: ‘The guy is Belgian or something. Not sure how guilty it is, as I could still dance to it and it was that summer, ahem. It was either this or Mariah Carey’s ‘Touch my Body’, which came along later.’
Let it All Hang Out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5n60uGwnJao
In her own words; ‘It just reminds me of one amazing summer, to have all of my friends with me, on the dancefloor’.
The Other Side: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xAAiYMgFcbw
In her own words: ‘I’ve been listening to classical and instrumental music for a couple of years now, and this piece really sort of hit me with its beaut- sorry! ’.
The Here and Now : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_lVOTPRGnw
In her own words: ‘I like Calvin Harris anyway, but Florence Welch is just…. Incredible’.
Book: Robinson Crusoe, Daniel Defoe or Lord of the Flies, William Golding
