I was born after the 'Dead Wings' era. All my life I've been a fan and for that time I've pretty much only seen success. When I was young and they were out west, my dad would let me stay up to watch part of those games.
Sure, the success has been tailing off for the past few years. The streak is important to keep in perspective too. There is a level of attrition that takes its toll as the better draft picks end up going away from your team.
Also the monopoly on the foreign market has been torpedoed. I didn't mind Babcock. To be perfectly honest I thought, and still think, he's a pretty good coach.
Based on his relationship with a lot of the players in Grand Rapids I had high hopes for Blashill this year. Yeah, his first year I was willing to write off as an adjustment period but now, this year, his 3rd season and coming off a road trip with just 2 wins...I'm not so sure anymore.
I don't know about Holland anymore either. I think signing Tatar and Nyquist to big contracts hasn't produced the results we all hoped. Those two have basically disappeared. We're relying on guys like Larkin and now Athanasiou to carry the load. Don't get me wrong, Larkin and Athanasiou, in my opinion, have a huge talent increase over many on the current roster.
I think the streak dies this year and if the Detroit sporting community is any indicator, there will need to be major changes made in the off season.
I'm not suggesting gutting the team or rebuilding for several years.
Some people think we're in for a long championship drought in Detroit. The Pistons were supposed to be really good this year, the Lions, well you get the Lions you get I guess, and the Tigers seem to me to be the most ready to compete. The city thrives on her sports and God knows it could use some good news. I think, as a Michigander for most of my life, you draw affinity to places like Detroit, which built Michigan. Now the economy has transferred to Grand Rapids where there is considerable hostility toward Detroit and the poor. I did some work in Detroit when I was at MSU and seeing entire blocks where maybe 2 or 3 houses were occupied is heartbreaking.
I honestly hope there is still some life left in Detroit.
