I just read on the net that Joe Torre and Yankees reliever Scott Proctor have both been suspended for Sunday's bench clearing brawl between the Yankees and Mariners. Torre for one game, which he is serving tonight, and Proctor for four games, which he is appealing.
This brawl made me think about the subject: Have any forum members ever been to a live major league baseball game where there was a bench clearing brawl? I've actually been to two such affairs, at least. The first time that I can recall was on May 14, 1994, Mets and Braves, Shea Stadium, the day before my college graduation. John Smoltz was pitching, and, in the fifth inning, gave up a Grand Slam homer to Mets outfielder Ryan Thompson. Smoltz, apparently frustrated, hit the next batter up, John Cangelosi, with a pitch, and it touched off a brawl, with both benches emptying. As I recall, Smoltz was ejected. Bobby Cox probably would have taken him out anyway, because he had given up eight runs in the game, and the score at the time was 8 to 1 Mets.
The other time was on June 11, 1996. Mets and Braves, again, at Shea. Former Braves lefty Steve Avery served up a three run homer to power hitting Met catcher Todd Hundley. After Hundley's homer, Avery hit the next guy up with a pitch, touching off another brawl between the Mets and Braves.
During such affairs, the fans get really rowdy, and many times, it stirs up tempers, to start fights in the stands. On both of those occasions, I remember the whole stadium being a very hostile enviroment, during the rest of the games.
So, anyhow, has anyone ever been to a baseball game, where there was a brawl? Just wondering.
