1.every time you lick a stamp you are consuming 1/10th of a calorie.
2.Plastic bottles can resist decomposition for an estimated 50,000 years
3.The sun can hold more than one million earths.
4.The weight of the moon is 81 billion tons.
5.Each unit on the Richter Scale is equivalent to a power factor of about 32. So a 6 is 32 times more powerful than a 5! Though it goes to 10, 9 is estimated to be the point of total tetonic destruction (2 is the smallest that can be felt unaided.)
6.Each year more than 300,000 American teenagers contract some form of a venereal disease.
7.A woman's arthritic pains almost always disappear as soon as she becomes pregnant.
8.The average American knows 10, 000 words.
9.To be able to read a Japanese business newspaper you'll need to know roughly 3000 characters.
10.You lose on average one hundred hairs a day.
11.The average person flatulates just over two cups of gas a day.
12.A person breathes seven quarts of air every minute.
13.Your skin is shed completely every 28 days.
14.During menstruation, the sensitivity in a woman's middle finger is reduced.
15.It is estimated that Americans will consume 10 million tons of Turkey on Thanksgiving day. Due to turkey's high sulphur content, Americans will also produce enough gas to fly a fleet of 75 Hindenbergs from L.A. to New York in 24 hours. (non smoking flights, of course)
16.Less than 1% of people over the age of 70 can cross the street at a crosswalk before the light changes.
17.The average person falls asleep in seven minutes.
18.A skunk will not bite and throw its scent at the same time.
19.The woolly mammoth, extinct since the Ice Age, had tusks almost 16 feet long.
20.Dirty Snow melts faster than clean.
21.All snow crystals are hexagonal.
22.During the heating months of winter, the relative humidity of the average American home is 13% nearly twice as dry as the Sahara Desert.
23.A bolt of lighting can strike the earth with a force as great as 100 million volts.
24.We are in the middle of an ice age. Ice ages include both cold and warm periods; at the moment we are experiencing a relatively warm span of time known as an "interglacial period." Geologists believe that the warmest part of this period occurred from 1890 through 1945 and that since 1945 things have slowly begun freezing up again. So much for the greenhouse effect.
25.Clouds fly higher during the day than the night.
26.A rainbow can occur only when the sun is 40 degrees or less above the horizon.

Hey Ray, correct me if I am wrong, but didn't I see that your status was atorangelevel? It's Yellow now.

With regard to #24., yes, I knew that. Thanks for bringing it up. So, in the long run, to prevent glaciers from once again covering North America down to the lattitude of central New Jersey, greenhouse gasses are a good thing.

PS Congratulations on your 3000th post!! 😀

Good list, Ray, EXCEPT for #24. Ten of the hottest years on record in the 20th century occured after 1973, so while the AVERAGE global temperature may be down (which I doubt after seeing the EPA's website on global warming), the greenhouse effect is real. Thanks, Ray. 🙂

P.S. I congratulated you on your 3000th in BigJim's thread. 😀

Actually, the warming caused by the green house effect will bring on the next glacial period sooner.

As the temperature rises, the polar ice caps will melt, causing a flood of fresh, cold water south, interrupting the flow of the Gulf Stream current. Without this warm water flowing up north anymore, the northern hemishpere will freeze up again.

(I saw this on a show on the Discovery channel)

Also, here's another fact:

The planet Saturn is less dense than water. If you could find an ocean big enough, the whole planet would float.
