I read somewhere thart Disney is going to make their demo discs to self destruct 48 hours after they're opened

Ive always been evil. As MTV Diary says "You thinmk you know, but you have no idea"

Why is Disney going to make self-destructing DVDs? Is the company worried about piracy?

Well, if they are only demo discs, then its not a bad idea. And most people won't care either way. If such a proposed disc contained a sizable ammount of a feature-length Disney film or a sizable ammount of any Disney material for that matter, then its with good reason that the disc becomes defective and unusable.

They're going to make them self destruct so that they can be used on Mission Impossible [tm]

These are going to be 'rental' DVD's.
The idea is that people won't have to make that extra trip to the store to return the 'rental', and the expense of tracking the DVD (who has it, when's it due back) is eliminated.

The DVD has a coating which begins to 'rust' as soon as the packaging is opened and oxygen gets to it. The coating turns black so the laser can't penetrate down to the data anymore.

The DVD can, however, be copied in that 48 hour window.

I suppose it's convenient for the consumer, though also a waste of a perfectly good DVD unless you copy it before it, um, expires. :zzzzz:

We've already got millions of unwanted AOL CDs cluttering up the landfills, now they're gonna add millions of unreadable Disney DVDs? Wasteful as hell.

Actually, those AOL demo discs sometimes come in a dvd box or tin box. I throw away the disc and keep the box for different things. Its definitely not a waste for me.

I don't know about you guys, but I confess to being one of the millions of Americans who no longer needs to buy coasters. (Hint, Hint.😀 )

Waste not, Want not, eh C_E? Good for you!

Actually, theres a web site of 2 guys who are aiming to collect 1 million or more of them then theyre going to mass mail them back to AOL 😀 I personally use mine for coasters
