I know this question hasnt been asked, at least by me, because I checked my threads that I've posted.

My question to forum members is.. Do you believe in the Afterlife? When someone dies, a loved one, or even when we ourselves die one day.. do forum members believe that we will just stop breathing.. die.. and that will be it.. or.. is there ,... an afterlife.. Heaven, where all the spirits meet up, and are together forever?

As everyone who has read my threads knows, my mom will be gone four weeks this Wednesday. One of my aunts told me that she believes that the spirit never dies, and that it is just "transformed". This also brings up the question of the afterlife? This aunt also told me that she believes people who know each other in this life, family members, friends, etc, all knew each other in a past life.

I'm not sure what to think.,. I havent really felt any presence in the apartment since my mom died. Of course, she hasnt been here since Feb 12, and she died in the nursing home on April 4th, and not here in the apartment.

Sometimes I have visions of a place called Heaven, where everyone who passes away goes, to serve God forever. I had a thought today of my mom, all my dead relatives, and everyone else having meetings with God in Heaven. All I can say is that if there is such a place, I hope my mom is happy, pain free, with our family, not scared, and that God and everyone else is treating her well. I was always there to take care of her when she was sick, and it both angers, and scares me, that I cant anymore. However, I know that she's better off at peace than suffering.

Anyhow, not to digress. The topic question is.. Is there an afterlife, after someone dies, and what happens there?

^^What? :sarcasm:

(edit: ^What what?? Something fishy going on in this thread... :sarcasm:)

To answer your question Mitch, I've been under general anaesthetic, and I can confirm that the spirit does not retain consciousness when you shut down the brain.

On the up side, there's no pain either.

Yeah, I never saw a light at the end of some tunnel, or flames. I'm kinda leaning towards reincarnation! I kind of wish I go get a past reincarnation, and come back as Morgan Freeman, Clint Eastwood, Chuck Norris, or maybe a Spartan King like Leonydas!

I believe in making the most of your life while you have it.

Worry about the after life AFTER your life is over, if you can. If not, obviously there is no after life.

Unless of course, the whole reason for bringing up the "afterlife" is just a excuse to continue talking about something else that's already been miserably overstated.

Barney and Leo, unfriggin real, both of you.

Tell ya what, Barney, if you dont like my talking about the thing that's been "miserably overstated" click off my posts or put me on ignore, like i do with you.

Leo, I was just asking a question. Your innuednos are really getting tiring.

Holy fuck.

Alright Mitchy poo darling, don't start with me. I was answering your question with an answer I would have given to anybody that asked me that. I wasn't insinuating anything, stop being butthurt.

Barney, that automatically makes you wrong, too.

Damn.

The only person who can give you a "correct" answer to this question is an agnostic, because they'll say "I don't know."

Growing up Catholic and going to Church and Sunday School when I was young I was taught there is a Heaven and a Hell. Now that being said I think when the body dies it just lays there in the dirt for the rest of time, however the soul I believe moves on to what I don't have a clue. We will all find out one day what will happen but until that day your guess is as good as mine.

I'm certain there is no such thing, it was probably thought up in fear, to be honest I think all religion was probably spawned from fear. The concept of not simply ending is lovely but its not the case, I would bet my life one it. However, I really don't think its a bad thing, once gone the brain shuts down and you can't think about it anymore, its weird like trying to imagine a new colour and I guess by then I'll be looking forward to something new, the last thing I want is to be stuck in some afterlife wishing I was back where I was.

I honestly don't know. From everything I know about biology, I don't believe there is such thing as a soul. I want to believe. I also want to believe in God, but I see too much crap that makes me doubt. I truly admire and envy people who deeply believe.

But, Mitch: this is really not a good time to ask a question like that. Not this short after a loved one died.

What this guy said.

We can't be sure - I'm sure I've thought it comforting to think of loved ones in a better place, but at the end of the day, who knows?
The only thing we can be certain of is how we live right here, right now; the only immortality we can be sure to attain is history's record of our lives.

Mitch

You are asking two different questions that require two different answers. Is there an afterlife? I don't know. Do I believe in an afterlife? Yes I do. What do I believe happens after you die? Well, if you were a good person, I believe you are given just that; a life in another dimension with a whole new set of lessons to learn. I believe that is why we are here on earth, Mitchell. It's to be educated, so when we leave this world, we can advance onto the next level of a higher or step closer of becoming a form of an advanced intelligence. If you are a bad person, I believe there is an afterlife for them too. The only difference is you won't advance to the next level. You will remain on the same one until you successfully complete the one you were already on, except you will have what I call impediments that you will now have to face to pay for the bad deeds you have done. That's not to say that I believe that person will be sent back here. That could be, or that person could be a form of life elsewhere with the same lessons. Think in terms of a video game, or better yet school or college. How can you expect to advance onto the next, or higher, level if you didn't gain the tools to pass the one you are already on? That is also the reason why I believe it's wrong for someone to commit suicide because they will be faced with the same fate as someone who was bad or evil, except if they weren't a bad person (like if they were just troubled or in unbearable suffering), I really don't think they will be given additional impediments to face. They'll just have to repeat the lesson they were once given.

Anyways, that is what I believe. That's not to say that it's true. As far as your mother goes, Mitchell. What I have personally experienced after both my grandfather and grandmother passed away. I personally believe that it's common for spirits to pay loved ones visits to check up on them, to see if they are okay or they feel you might need them for one reason or another. And when they do, it comes in many forms. It could be a sign that even though it may be a bit bizaare, but will also be way too coincidental to dismiss as anything else. You may see your mother in your dreams. There may be times where you will not see her, but will feel her presence, where there are other times you won't. But Mitchell, she will ALWAYS be with you.....in your heart.

Mitch, I honestly don't know what to believe anymore people say one thing others say another and no matter what everyone is always critiqued whether its belief or non belief I wont know until my last breath is taken I just hope that when it is my time whenever it may be I hope I'll happy...My deepest condolences to you and your family

Do I believe in one? No.

Is there one? Dunno.

In the end, I believe that there is nothing that speaks to its existence except for first-hand witnesses to hypoxia and the human desire for justice. But feeling weird when your brain runs out of air, and wanting something to be so because the alternative seems "unfair" does nothing to convince me that there is one. If there is though, it's probably pretty much like your pre-life was. How'd you like that?

luvgirlsfeet, thank you for your condolences.

Wabbit, I really like your answer. Thank you. You mentioned believing its common for spirits to pay visits to check up on loved ones.

My mom will be gone four weeks tomorrow. I've been home since April 8th. Even though she and I lived here together for 13 years, I havent felt her presence, or her pay me a visit, as you mentioned.

However,my mom told me that, in 1989, after my maternal grandfather died, she used to feel his presence in our old house in CT where we lived with my dad. She would tell me instances where she would feel a certain feeling of something or someone passing her in the hall. Additionally, she told me one instance of a night she was sleeping, when my father wasnt home, and she felt an unexplained energy or presence squeeze her hand in her sleep.

My aunt who is into astrology believes that people never really die, and that they are transformed, into an energy, that is alive always.

I often wonder if the afterlife, if there is one, and the experience with it, is diffferent for someone who dies a peaceful death, and is ready to die, as opposed to someone whose death is not peaceful, and isnt ready to die.

I think this is an interesting discussion.

That is something you might or might not experience. When I experienced it, it didn't happen right away. It was awhile after they passed.

However,my mom told me that, in 1989, after my maternal grandfather died, she used to feel his presence in our old house in CT where we lived with my dad. She would tell me instances where she would feel a certain feeling of something or someone passing her in the hall. Yes. Experiences like that. After my grandfather passed away, I remember coming home on a Saturday evening from working overtime at my job. I carpooled with a lady and when I dropped her off, I got lost and didn't know where I was. I remained calm and eventually found an exit off of the freeway and sure enough I knew where I was. What was really weird about it was when I realized where I was, I passed by a building my grandfather used to have his metal fabricating shop in. Coincidence? That's what I mean when I mentioned bizaare signs that are more than just a coincidence. Another would be when I used to sleep downstairs and turned out the light. When I woke up, I saw my grandfather sitting in the recliner he always sat in when he was still alive. He was smoking a cigarette. I can't remember the entire conversation I had, but I do remember hugging him with my eyes closed and telling him that I love him and when I opened my eyes, he was gone. Then, when I woke up later, thinking this was just a dream, I noticed the light was on when I definitely remember turning it off before going to sleep.

Another would be when my grandmother passed away. My grandmother bought my mom a deck of tarot cards that she really wanted for Christmas. One day, that box containing them, just shot off of the shelf and out on the middle of the floor. And the tarot cards weren't like they were just on the edge of the shelf either. They were really back in there and it's not like they just dropped off the shelf and fell straight down either. Guess what the the image was on the back of the cards? Angels. Guess what was on the shelf right below? The urn with my grandmother's ashes in them? It was almost like she was telling her daughter that I am watching you, I am here if you ever need me, and I just wanted to let you know that I am okay and the place where I am is peaceful.

I have also felt my grandmother's presence. On the second floor hallway to be exact. I would also smell a scent as if she was wearing the perfume she used to wear a long time ago when we was still alive and healthy. I've woken up from a deep sleep hearing her calling my name but didn't see her anywhere.

My aunt who is into astrology believes that people never really die, and that they are transformed, into an energy, that is alive always.

Exactly. Whether you are a Christian, Wiccan, Muslim, Pagan, Agnostic or even an Atheist, there is some form of a higher power out there somewhere. Whether you refer to it as God, a Supreme Being, an energy field, The Force (like they do in Star Wars), advanced intelligence, somewhere there has to be a higher power. Even with those who believe in the Big Bang Theory, something out there had to be behind that spontaneous combustion and for it to be precisely configured to turn out the way it did.

I often wonder if the afterlife, if there is one, and the experience with it, is diffferent for someone who dies a peaceful death, and is ready to die, as opposed to someone whose death is not peaceful, and isnt ready to die.

Can you elaborate more as to what you mean? For example, are you talking about someone who let's say had sleep apnea, stopped breathing, therefore died from pulmonary sarcoidosis, which would be a peaceful way to go, as opposed to someone who died from Multiple Myeloma, which would be a slow, agonizing and unremitting death?

If so, it depends. If it was their time to go, whether they were ready to die or not, their time is up and that's it. The only time the afterlife is going to be different depend on whether the person was good or evil. Will their energy be different based on how they died? No. If they were good (positive), if they were evil (negative).

Now, if you mean if the afterlife will be different for someone whose life was cut off short, such as a person who got murdered and died instantly from a gunshot wound to the head as opposed to someone who was tortured to death?

If so, the answer is no. The afterlife itself would not be different. However, there are those whose life was short lived and because they were murdered, they resent it and instead of crossing over to the other side, they decide to drift among the same dimension as us. These are what are often referred by most people as ghosts and the reason why they do not cross over is for a variety of reasons: 1) they haven't accepted the fact that they are dead and still believe they are alive, 2) they are afraid to cross over because in most people's minds it has been ingrained that people are judged and are sent to one of two places; heaven or hell. And they are not ready to meet their fate because they fear if for reason if they are not good enough to be accepted into "Heaven", they don't want to be judged and face damnation, which once that is done, it's eternal, or 3) they resent the fact that their life was cut short and they just absolutely positively refuse to cross over because their time was not up and are sticking around because what happened to them was unfair and unjust and they want justice. I am sure you have seen or heard of either tv show ghost adventures or ghost hunters where they go to these haunted places? Or you hear about stories where whomever murdered someone ended up being haunted where they were driven to a mental hospital or played on their conscience until they go to the police and confess what they did? That's the spirit getting their revenge and once they see justice has been done, then they cross over to the other side.

Another thing I don't believe is if someone dies gruesomely, some will say that when you cross over, you'll see their spirt as their physical body was, which is to say all deformed and disfigured. I don't believe that because if they were a good person and you are also good and being sent to the same place as they are, that would a terrifying experience to deal with for all eternity.

I hope this answers your questions. If not, please clarify and I'll try to answer it.

Wabbit, thanks for your feedback. Let me explain what I mean in regard to my question of the afterlife being different for someone who dies peacefully, or is ready to die, as opposed to someone who isnt.

As you know if you've read my posts, my mom passed away of metastatic lung and brain cancer. Leading up to her death, she wasnt completely unconscious, or in a coma, but was rather in a semi sleep state. Based on statements she made shortly before she died, she wasnt ready to leave me yet. As I've posted before, I was by my mom's side when she passed away. Not to be.. graphic about a person who is dead, but.. when my mom died, she had a horrible look on her face, that was anything but peaceful. Her mouth was partially open, and her face was almost clenched. I'm just wondering.. if . there is an afterlife.. whether someone who passes away as my mom did, fighting it, not ready, not peaceful, has a different experience with the afterlife then someone who is ready to die, and dies peacefully.

I hope that explains it. Let me know.

I think I know what you mean. But to answer your question, I don't think anyone would be able to unless they themselves have actually had a near death experience. There are just some things that life reveals to us, not when we would like to know, but when the time is right. Sometimes it's through wisdom, through maturity and through the change of the seasons. Then, there are things, like you are asking about, that none of us will know until we are actually dying or until after we are dead.

With the things your mother had wrong with her, she was deathly ill. It's hard saying why she had that look on her face. It could be that she just happened to be stricken by pain from her illness just before her life ended. Or, it could have been a control factor. Some people have issues of "letting themselves go" while others feel the need to be in control at all times. I am kinda that way. When I was put under anesthesia for the first time in my life and before it took it's effect on me, I felt the room get bright, then dim, then my vision blurred and was out of focus where all of the sudden my eyelids felt heavy and because it startled me, I tried to keep them open but was unable to do so.

Is death along those lines, where if you are trying to hang on but can't because you lose total control and to resist it would feel as if your spirit is being sucked out of you by, let's say, a tractor beam? I don't know.

But one thing I am convinced to a near certainty on, and that is this. I didn't know your mother, nor did I ever meet her or ever talk to her. However, obviously she was a very good lady or you wouldn't speak of her in the way you do. I think it's safe to say that she lived a long good life. And just like anybody else, we all have a purpose for being here and usually once that purpose has been served, our time is up and it's time to go. Some lead a long life, like your mother. Others unfortunately end up being called home early. Take both Jimi Hendrix and John Lennon for examples. They both died young, they contributed a lot to the music industry, so much to the extent that they figured out what their purpose was and served it way too fast because people like that happen to either have an intelligence level of a genius or are gifted in some way, because it takes most of us a lifetime to figure it out and then to fulfill it.

It's too bad she wasn't given just a moment longer to tell you what she wanted to before leaving. That would be difficult thing to have to live with. I am very sorry. You have my condolences.

No. Don't worry, no haunting is going to happen.
