Doctor's Meeting-A Major Life Change-For A While

Today, my mom and I went up to NJ for a meeting with Dr C, the initial Dr we saw on TV, and met with, last year, who does direct radiation, and he told us of a major development in my mom's situation.

Dr C said that while the full body scan results were "Good", and showed that my mom's tumors have shrunk, he also said that the results caused him to want to go for what he called a "knockout punch", to get rid of the tumors completely. This is where the bombshell comes in, and it wasn't exactly surprising, because this is something we suspected might happen when we first started this journey last year.

Dr C said my mom will now need a course of direct radiation on a daily basis, for a period of six weeks, for 20 to 30 minutes a day. Dr C said that while he's not "God", he is viewing this treatment as a "cure", which he said can extend my mom's life indefinitely.

As most people who have been following this situation are aware, we live 150 miles each way, from the hospital, and it is impossible for us to travel 300 miles round trip, each day.

As a result, we are going to have to live at a facility near the hospital for a period of six weeks, so that my mom can undergo treatment. It will be very expensive, and inconvinient, but.. if it is going to God Willing extend my mom's life indefinitely, we will do whatever it takes.

We have another meeting with Dr C next Friday. He had wanted to begin treatment within a week to ten days, to ensure the tumors dont God Forbid start growing back, but,. as it is going to take us time to arrange housing, pack, and what not, he has agreed to begin treatment on Monday, May 23rd. I will probably only be able to come home once during this period, until likely early to mid July. There are laundry facilities on the property, and I will have to get a laptop, so I can do work, and hopefully communicate with friends.

My mom seems more unsettled about the whole "We have to move for six weeks" thing than I do. My view is this: If moving for six weeks, will extend my mom's life for years, as opposed to it God Forbid ending prematurely if we dont do this, we need to do the move. I view this whole situation as a long, necessary business trip.

So, thats the update. I will likely be home for another two weeks.

We also had unsettling moments the last 2-3 days, when my mom coughed streaks of blood, for the first time in months, but. as the blood as not the magnitude that it was before the treatment, Dr C said he believes such is an irritation from allergies, and thankfully not the cancer.

Anyhow, so thats where things stand. Thanks for the support I have received about this situation.

Mitch,

Your mom seems like she has a soul of a warrior!

I have nothing but positive thoughts, and praise for her!

Thanks, nv, I appreciate your good thoughts. Yes, she does have the soul of a warrior, but.. as I said before, this move unsettled her. I know that I'm going to have to be the one to support her through this, because living away for six weeks is going to be tough for her. The way I see it, the potential gain far outweighs the six week sacrifice.

Thanks, love feet, I appreciate it.

Thanks, 9th Doctor, I appreciate it, my friend,

Mitch

One other point I should bring out: Positive news. Dr C also said yesterday that the fact he wants to do the radiation now, means that the tumors have shrunk enough, that he feels he can get rid of them. He said if the tumors didn't shrink as much as they have, it would have meant nine more weeks of chemo, and maybe this step we have to do now, down the road. He also said she will need a very minute dose of chemo, one day a week, with Dr B. The details of that, he said, they will have to figure out.

Glad to hear everything is going well for you and your mom. Best of luck on having to relocate for six weeks it will all be worth it if the cancer goes away. I'm really pulling for the best outcome possiable for you and your mother.

Thank you, Angel. I greatly appreciate your good wishes.

good luck to your mom bud. nobody should have to go through that. I hope it does truly cure her

My best to you and you're mother Mitch. It will be a difficult six weeks for you both, but the anticipated end result sounds promising.

Thanks, arion, I appreciate your thoughts. I dont recall if you've been following the situation, but the reason we are having my mom treated by doctors in NJ, is because the ones here in Lancaster misdiagnosed her cancer. The Lancaster doctors initially told us she had Stage 4 Metastatic Lung Cancer, when she in fact only has Stage 1. As I said before, our doctor believes this is either a "cure", or at worst case, a long term life extension.

Thanks, bug, my friend. Yes, the six weeks may be a bit difficult, but, you are right that the result does sound promising, and that's why we need to do this.

Mitch, have you asked if there's a Ronald McDonald house nearby? If so, you might be able to stay there rather than having to find a place and pay rent. Just a thought. Prayers go with you, either way.

Hi Ann,

Thanks for the thoughts. I looked it up online. No Ronald Mcdonald House, so thats not an option. Also, the Drs want my mom to be close to the hospital, in case God Forbid she has a complication from the radiation, gets sick, etc.

As always, I appreciate your prayers and support.

Hope you and your family are well.

Take care,.

One other thing I forgot to mention:

At the start of my mom's treatment, she had a lump in her breast. The chemo Dr, Dr B, would not commit to whether it was breast cancer or not. All he said was that the chemo would help the lung tumors, and whatever the lump in the breast was.

Yesterday, during the meeting with Dr C, he confirmed to us that while the lump in the breast was definitely breast cancer: The breast lump is now completely gone, thank heavens.

Just forgot to mention that, but.. it was a positive development.. of course.
