Does anyone else remember Tickle Pickle Day?

No, I am not making this up.

When I was in the first years of elementary school, we had a monthly magazine put out by Scholastic called Dynamite. It was one of those magazines that tries so hard to be young and cool but isn't.

Every issue included a calendar of the month with silly anniversaries, but there was one entry in one issue that I will never forget. Even at that pre-pubescent age, tickling must have meant something to me. What delight I felt as my eyes hit upon a giggling anthropomorphic pickle in one month's calendar; the caption above the giggling pickle advised me to remember Tickle Pickle Day. I know I smirked menacingly both inwardly and outwardly. And I can still remember the text beneath the caption and giggling pickle: "No, it isn't a day to tickle a ticklish friend to pickles." I was intrigued!

Then I was annoyed, as the magazine told me it was a day to remember how delicious and nutritious pickles were yadda yadda.

I felt cheated! What happened to tickling a ticklish friend to pickles?

After all these years, I still want my money back!

Don't remember "tickle pickle day", but I do remember "Dynamite" magazine when I was in the 9th grade. And one cover still sticks in my mind today.....a huge close-up of the soles of someone's bare feet painted all tye-dye and psycedelic. Remember thinking when I saw it if there was anyway of finding out if these were a girl's soles. And if so, what her reaction was while her feet were being painted? :woot:

I only vaguely recall Dynamite Magazine. I was in, like, the 1st or 2nd grade when those were being published. Same era as the show, The Electric Company and those kooky Sid & Marty Croft shows like Sigmund & The Sea Monsters. My entire generation probably has a strong case for a class-action suit of child abuse against the media in general from back then.

Then again, they're inflicting lame shit like The Wiggles and the Boohbahs on today's youth...

Case in point...

artist: Captain & Tennille lyrics
title: Muskrat Love

(Willis Alan Ramsey)

Muskrat, Muskrat, candle light
Doin' the town and doin' it right in the evenin'
It's pretty pleasin'
Muskrat Suzie, Muskrat Sam
Do the jitterbug at a Muskrat Land
And they shimmy, Sam is so skinny

And they whirl and they twirl and they tango
Singin' and jinglin' a jangle
Float like the heavens above
Looks like Muskrat Love

Nibblin' on bacon
Chewin' on cheese
Sam says to Suzie
Honey, would you please be my Mrs
Suzie says, yes, with her kisses
Now, he's ticklin' her fancy
Rubbin' her toes
Muzzle to muzzle
Now anything goes as they wriggle
Sue starts to giggle
*

And they whirled and they twirled and they tango
Singin' and jinglin' a jangle
Floatin' like the heavens above
Looks like muskrat love

*Area purposefully emphasized.

You can get Boxer shorts and T shirts on Ebay that say Tickle my Pickle 😀

Oh yes, Dr, Bill Kobb. I've adored the Captain and Tennille song "Muskrat Love" since I was a child. There is even a brief squeaky organ instrumental that is supposed to be Sue's laughter.

Featherfingers: I know I read that very issue at one point, as the cover is familiar. Thanks for posting it.

TklDuo-Drew: Cool! Psychadelic tickling, perhaps? 😱

Those boxers sound hysterical, ticklemad!

Come to think of it, now I am not sure if it was Pickle Tickle Day or Tickle Pickle Day. 😀

Heck yeah! I mean, just look at that Dynomite cover!
The Cap'n`s fingers tickling the ivories right about where Sue's feets might be.
It's pretty plain to me that they should be the feetured guests at the next Nest: The First-Ever Pop-Act to bring tickling out of the closet(although I'm not really sure if our quaint little play was ever prohibited) Award goes to...

Love will keep us together.

Incidentally...

Does anyone else get totally freaked-out at the Capt.?!? He always wore that weird "I-could-tell-you-things"-stare, even on TV.

I think he was just ahead of his time...

Come to think of it, he always did freak me out!

The lyrics to that one include

You! You belong to me now!
Ain't gonna set you free now!

🙂 🙂 🙂

And the Captain and Tennille song "Disney Girls" talks about pillow fights and "your soft laugh."

(I'm definitely reading too much into this.)

Not at all.

I think there's something to all this! You simply don't produce music that awful unless you're purposefully pushing some secret agenda...

...or flat-out whacked.

I won't be able to sleep, now. Thanks to: The Captain. :sadcry:

When's the last time YOU'VE seen `em?

I was afraid of this.

`70's pop-rock was always pushing the boundaries, chimp/human tickling, pickle-tickling, whatever that week's new high was, that's where groups like Air Supply,Seals and Krofts, Leo Sayer, and The Captain & Tenniel could be found.

Thing is...

Once you go down that sordid chimp-tickling road of no return, there's no turning back(because it's a, um, road of no return and all).

Witness now, the horrible last known images of The Captain & Tenniel!
Scroll down to the end of the page to see the grisley fate of these beloved pop-icons...

IF YOU DARE!!!

This whole thread is one giant flashback. Absolutely remember Dynamite! Read it in the dentist's waiting room all the time. Don't remember the tickle pickle thing- even as a child, that would have caught my eye as well.

Those lines in Muskrat Love always made me feel the need to hide, for some reason. 🙂

And Dr. Bill Kobb- yes the stare is freaky, but in a GOOD way!

Me too! I would've probably zeroed-in on that even as a kid, also. I would actually sit through shows like Hee Haw, Dukes of Hazzard, Wonder Woman, and Charlies Angels, hoping and praying for even a tangential reference to tickling/feathers/etc. Dispite some awesome opportunities, it practically never happened. :sadcry:

To me, the Captain looks almost haunted, perhaps mute from witnessing some ghastly event. Perhaps he has seen the Secret Muskrat Tickling Rituals of the Jivaro and it drove him mad.
His eyes virtually scream, "Get me out of this ridiculous pirate-shirt!"
I bet if he ever took off the sailer cap, there'd be a white streak in his hair from seeing a ghost or something.
