Does Gender have anything to do with ticklishness?

Iam a very ticklish guy, but recently I have been questioning to myself whether gender as a whole has anything to do with ticklishness. More specifically, as a general rule, are women more ticklish than men? While Iam of course aware that there are many highly ticklish TMF guys like myself, I just wonder if as a general rule, and as a gender, there are more ticklish women than ticklish men. Also, most specifically, are there more very to extremely ticklish girls, than there are very to extremely ticklish men? I'd appreciate hearing any thoughts on this subject from the chatters. Thanks.

Mitch

Frankly, I think females are more ticklish than males. Not to say there are no extremely ticklish guys, or non-ticklish girls, but I suspect the average female will be more ticklish than the average male.

I don't have a whole lot to back this up. That's just the way it seems to me through observation, and well being ticklish strikes me as a feminine thing. I don't know why, I'm likely wrong.

I also believe blindly that EVERYONE is ticklish, but many only under certain circumstances or states of mind.

gender

I don't really feel that gender is a factor- though I kinda understand what you're getting at

I am also a very ticklish guy, my wife is not tickish and my son is ticklish although not as ticklish as I am. Most of my life I've been told that women are more sensitive, including more ticklish. I have come to doubt that. I do think, however, that our culture promotes the idea that women are more ticklish and that men consequently try to hide their ticklishness. In the last couple of years, there have been some academic studies of tickling in California and the U.K. Most of them have concluded that there is not much difference between the genders when it comes to beng ticklish. In other words, men and women are pretty much equally ticklish. One study noted that men proved in their tickling experiments to be every bit as ticklish as women but that they were much less lkely to admit to being ticklish. Also, a couple of the studies have suggested that men may be a slightly more ticklish than women. It has been pointed out that this would fit with Darwin's theory that the function of ticklishness is associated with defending oneself when hunting and fighting (traditionally male roles.) Ticklishness is seen as a kind of alarm system that someone or something is creeping up on us. This theory would suggest that men are more ticklish.

Uh, no... 🙄
I don't think there's a difference...it's just difficult to conceive of some rugged moustached macho man or some NFL tight end getting tickled, we're much more apt to think of a female in that regard. As men we're not keyed to think of men getting tickled, so we think of the sensitivity as a feminine thing...
Mitch, my good friend, you have too much free time on your hands LOL
😛

Although I myself am a man, and very ticklish everywhere, based on observations, I'd have to say women, in general, are much more ticklish than most of us guys. One more reason why they're so much fun!

Gender has nothing to do with ticklishness. There are non-ticklish guys and non-ticklish women. There are very ticklish women and very ticklish guys.

Let me add my two cents. Although I haven't heard about any new scientific research in that field, I read a bit about how it was in the past. In the beginning of XX century it was a scientific "known fact", that women and children are much more ticklish. I read it in at least two old Polish encyclopedias under the subject "tickling".

Guys are ticklish, but I think women tend to be more so. That's just my personal experience.

hmm

I have wondered that as well, i think females might be more ticklish because they are more sensative, but not too sure:devil: if ya find out lemme know.

gender ticklishness

Being a guy who loves to tickle and be tickled I dont think that there is a great deal to choose between guys and gals I think its more a case of trusting your tickler

It's so hard to say whether females are more ticklish than males. But my own observations show, that females tend to get more tickled than males. What do you say? If I'm right, has it something to do with culture? Or is it because females are better ticklees? Let me hear some opinions.

Specifically and as far as gender is concerned I don't think gender has anything to do with it. Genetic wise, I think females are more ticklish. It's a sensitivity thing too.

TTD😉 😀

women seem to get tickled so much more often than men- does this have anything to do with it do you suppose?

I don't think gender has anything to do with it. I'm an extremely ticklish female and my friend ticklebear2 is even more ticklish than me. Gender isn't an issue. It's more about trust and the reaction of nerve endings.

I think gender matters not....and even though yoda I speak like I am serious...I am a ridiculously ticklish female and I know men who are verrry ticklish as well...I also know females and males who are not....although I agree with whoever wrote (I am too much of a lazybones to scroll....) that more people than not are really ticklish but for many reasons are not in touch with it....anyway, that said...I think a comparative study is in order....ten tmf men and women immediately report to my home for intense tickles and data collection 🙂

i'm suprised at the answers so far

such a good group of folks, many i respect. and all wrong!

as a whole women are much more ticklish than men. exceptions aside.

Are you serious?
Well, maybe you could be right, but I would like to hear the reason for your opinion. It could convince me. We'll see. 😉

hmm I rather difficult question which if their is a true answer I doubt we will ever know. But as a cultural element I have found that most females tend to be the lee while males tend to be the lers. I would also like to add that as a whole most males are less sensitive in the standard tickle area's but that doesn’t make guys less ticklish if one finds their spots.

But as been pointed out most guys either don't know if they have such spots but have never been tickled to find out or they do know and are not letting on. I have noticed that when many couples play you can see the male jump as if being tickled, although that’s how far it goes, it would suggest that gender has little to do with tickling more our perception on the culture of tickling makes females seem to be the most ticklish.

I remeber an article on here a long time ago that said statistically men are supposed to be more ticklish.

Personally, I don't think gender has anything to do with how ticklish someone actually is. However, culture teaches men to try to hide any weakness while women are allowed to show it and are much more likely to show it. If you hit a man, you may hurt him as much as a woman, but if the man cries, he is seen as weak, so he tries to hide his pain. A woman will openly cry and is not ashamed of it. Thus, I think the same thing is in effect with tickling. Women are simply much more likely to show their ticklisness than men. My 2 cents.

Destro, you state it very well and the scholarly studies agree with what you state.

Then perhaps a question is, are women more ticklish, or simply more tickled? 🙂
