Hi all,

Like the fool that I am, I purchased two DVDs of one of our fave shows, "British Men Behaving Badly", for my husband for Father's Day. Since I bought them from BBC America I assumed they would be fine on an American DVD player, but that's not the case-they're series 2 PAL and I apparently live in series 1.

Amazon.com/UK won't take them back because they've both been opened (one because we had no idea it wouldn't work, the other because of my toddler) and there's no way I can sell them used for what they're worth, they're brand new. (grrrrr!)

Does anyone know where an American can buy or rent a PAL DVD player, or have these converted, or whatever the heck else I can do? I'd also be willing to trade them for something else as long as I can play it here 😛 !

Thanks in advance, any help will be much appreciated.

You can solve the region problem by buying a region-free DVD player. You might pay a little more for the player than a region 1 player, but it's worth it in the long run, if you like a lot of foreign stuff like BBC releases. Note that a region free player will play all 8 DVD regions that exist, and it will also play the few DVDs out there that aren't region specific.

Good god, dont tell me they re-named it 'British men behaving badly'! Over here its just called 'Men behaving badly'! At least I THINK its the same show. Oh, and you and your husband have a great taste in comedy! The episode with the appendix is a pure classic....

It's just called "British Men Behaving Badly" over here to differentiate it from the American version, which came after it. We love both shows. The British version has Martin Clunes, one of my fave brit actors and the voice of Kipper, the little dog on Nick Jr. 😎

Thanks for the help, guys!

The only thing with getting a region free dvd player is then you'd have to get one that converts from PAL video format to NTSC format. Region 2 dvds are often in PAL, since that is what the UK uses, and here in the US we use NTSC video. Without going into a long drawn-out explanantion of the differences, even if you get a player that will play the R2 dvd, your TV will not show the video correctly due to the differences in the video, so make sure the dvd player does the conversion to NTSC.

The odd thing is, most Region 2 UK DVD players will play yank disks. I think the reason is that American diska are not at all rare here, but British ones in the US are rarer than rocking horse poo.

That's really weird... I've never had trouble playing PAL discs... but then again, I do have a pretty expensive DVD player....
