Embedding pictures...

Have been away a while. Just curious as to why we can't embed pictures here or if there is a way to that I haven't figured out.

We have disallowed embedding for the time being because there would be no way for us to limit the dimensions or file size, which in some cases could be excessive. If a future version of vBulletin allows such control, we would probably allow embedding at least in the image forums.

Yeah, they allow embedding, but I never see much problem with pictures that are oversized. Not sure if vBulletin has a way of controlling oversized pictures or what, though.

I'll forgive you, because you're new here and all. Basically, when two adult members of the forum hit it off, and decide to take things a step further, and actually get together in meatspace, one (usually the male) will send the other (usually a female) a v-bulletin, asking if she's interested in more than just tickling, and possibly embedding together. It's just a form of Netiquette.*

"vBulletin" is the brand of software that the forum uses, and "embedding" is the act of adding a full-sized, remotely hosted image directly into a post as an alternative to uploading it to the forum and having it appear as a clickable thumbnail. (I prefer Rick Tibbler's definitions, however 😉 )

Embedding pics can be more of a pain than what they're worth.

I'm a "Global Moderator" on a Brokeback forum, which allows pics to be embedded, so they appear in the post, and not as an attachment.

We have publicly stated rules that pics must be no bigger than 200KBs, and in dimension of 640X480.

Of course, the members have other ideas 🙄 and since there is no restriction that stops it, oversized pics get posted.

We've had members post pics as large at 600KB and over 800X1000. When multiple images of this size get placed, it will slow down the loading time of the page, especially for members who still use dial up connections. We've heard from members with DSL connections that they experience slow downs as well, due to how large the files are.

I think a lot of people here are pretty net-savvy, so I doubt there would be much issue with pictures so large that they distort the page. It's not a big deal either way. I prefer embedding to uploading, but it ain't no thang. Thanks for the replies.
