Exclusive: Fantastic Four is Getting the Boot...a Reboot that is
Written by IESB Staff

IESB's has heard word around town is Fantastic Four over at 20th Century Fox is gearing up for a reboot.

With Daredevil already getting the once over and Planet of the Apes also in the running for a new start with a prequel in the works Fantastic Four is joining the reboot gang.

The two films previously released never really caught on with the fans and the studio is reportedly looking to completely retool, recast and recrew the franchise. This means no Tim Story, no Iaon, no Julian (thank the maker, he never sat well with me as Dr. Doom), no Chris, no Chiklis and no Jessica.

The first Fantastic Four in 2005 pulled in over $330 million worldwide and the second film, Fantastic Four Rise of the Silver Surfer, opened in 2007 with a total box office take of $290 million. Both made money and were commercial successes but the reviews were lackluster and the fan reaction was mediocre.

The franchise is looking to be "less bubble gum" this time round following the Iron Man template, which was a complete success in reviews and box office take but a bit darker when it came to its superhero. Iron Man was in no way as dark as The Dark Knight but was funny, action-y as well as a bit on the serious side.

I'm not an expert the F4 comics but the tone of the films seemed to reflect the comics fairly well from what I can remember. They took some liberties with the plot but they always have to with these things. The end result was a bit middle of the road but not awful.

I'd be interested to see a re-boot but I think going back over the origin story, introducing the characters again, etc when they're only 2 films in would be quite tedious.

Now if they wanted to do a complete x-men re-boot, that I could get behind. The 3rd film was a bit of a travesty in my opinion.

I know I'm alone in this, but I enjoyed the FF films (although, I admit, I didn't like Galactus being a cloud). I thought they were family friendly and that reflected the tone of the comics very well. The FF are not the X-Men or even the Avengers for that matter. They shouldn't be treated as such. I never cared for the FF in darker themed stories...it always seemed too "out there" for them.

Rebooting the franchise after two movies were made is just dumb in my opinion. I just got used to the actors in their roles and their chemistry, now I have to do that all over again? This just makes Fox look like they can't handle a movie franchise to save their lives. When will the Daredevil and Fantastic Four movie rights go back into Marvels hands?

I think it's silly. "We're going to completely change the Fantastic Four, because they didn't groove with fans as-they-were." Maybe... the Fantastic Four, just, doesn't have that big of an audience at this point, and if they aren't happy with their profits they should try something new?

It almost sounds like they're trying to force people to like it by changing what "it" is, except for the actual name.

This is wasting time, Marvel should be focusing on getting better heros out there, like Antman and the Wasp. That would be a brilliant film and would add in the darker side to the franchise too.

The real problem is, Marvel is trying to appeal to both older and younger fans at the same time. I really liked the first Fantastic 4 film. The second one, I could have left out, but all in all, they weren't bad, just a little messy.

It'll be interesting to see how they present the Avengers

Its not Marvel, its Fox. Fox has the movie rights to the Fantastic Four, X-Men, Wolverine, Daredevil and Elektra. Columbia has the movie rights for Spider-Man and Ghost Rider. Lions Gate has the movie rights to the Punisher. Eventually, those rights will revert back to Marvel...depending on what the contracts state.

Marvel is in direct control of Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Ant-Man and Avengers movies right now. You have to credit/blame where it is due.

Fair enough. I just hope we get good Thor, Ant-Man and Avengers movie.
