Favorite Horror movies from the 70s and 80s?

Slightly whiny answer: I can't recall seeing any movie based on Lovecraft that's gotten the "feel" of his writings quite right. It's a difficult task.

neither i dont', but i remenber jhon carpenter's "in the mouth of madness" , it is very near to lovecraft universe, also another films that are not based in any tale of lovecraft remenber me "the lovecraft feeling" like "alien" , "the thing","panic in the transiberian"...

Yes! Very good point about Alien. While not specifically a "Lovecraftian" story, it is(to me) the best movie yet to compare to that certain something that old H.P. brought to horror. Good calls on the others, too. In the Mouth of Madness definitely has it's moments. Another decent one was the horror anthology Necronomicon, which was abit hit-&-miss, and suffered some from mere budgetary concerns, but the "Love" still came through.

So, it's set during the holidays? Just one more reason for me to see it then! I try to slip in at least one Christmas-season horror movie somewhere during those insane days between Thanksgiving and Christmas. It's become a sort of "tradition" with me...

Well, truth be told, no. It doesn't take place during the holidays. I'm just saying Robert Beltran puts on a Santa suit during part of the flick.

Close enough! :popcorn:Couldn't find a Santa-smiley, although I thought we had one.

In the Mouth of Madness, yes! And Necronomicon, especially the first segment- except you see too much of the monsters...
Ever read the story Reanimator? It's hilarious, but extremely scary at the same time.

"Cthulhu Mansion" was a total waste of time and not worth seeing...

And I've heard remarked that Ghostbusters is very Lovecraftian, and I agree- it's got an ancient pagan god, a secret cult who built a skyscraper to channel it, etc...

ooo can Reefer Madness count? That was an okay movie trying to scare people out of smoking and it's the only closest classic horror I ever saw lol

Technically? No. It's a 1936 movie. However, since it enjoyed such a revival during the midnight movie craze of the 70's & 80's, I suppose we could lump it in with the discussion.

Reefer Maddness I think I saw that like 10 years ago. Is that the movie where like 4 people smoke a joint. Then go completelt insane like they're trippin on acid or something? I'll have to do a wiki search.

You can watch the whole sordid tale here. :leaf: :scared

That's the one lol

If you liked the new one you'll love the old one.

ah a new one and old.Why do they always do that as if the old one wasn't good enough.

Arsenic and Old Lace?

I cannot imagine how I forgot one of my favorite horror flicks of all time!

Pumpkinhead.

That flick was the shit, friends. Lance Henriksen in a role only he could play, and the coolest movie monster ever (maybe next to the Balrog). Every time I see some old shack out in the woods somewhere, I can hear that old witch's voice..."Whatchoo want, Ed Haaaawley?" 🙂
