Just having found the "favorite horror movies" thread, I thought this might go along with it.

So, fellow horror fans, what are some of your favorite books or stories? Some of mine would have to be:

Books:
Hell House, Richard Matheson
Pet Sematary, Stephen King
Ghost Story, Peter Straub
The Manitou, Graham Masterton
Some of Your Blood, Theodore Sturgeon
The Traveling Vampire Show, Richard Laymon

Stories:
H.P. Lovecraft: "The Rats in the Walls", "The Thing on the Doorstep"
M.R. James: "Number 13", "A School Story"
J. Sheridan le Fanu: "Carmilla", "Ghost Stories of the Tiled House"
Gary A. Braunbeck: "Haceldama"
Edward Page Mitchell: "The Devilish Rat"
H.F. Arnold: "The Night Wire"
Stephen King: "Gray Matter"
Michael Marshall Smith: "More Tomorrow"
Graham Greene, "A Little Place Off the Edgeware Road"

I'm not a horror junkie for books, movies, tv shows or anything.

However, I did finish reading Bram Stoker's Dracula a little while ago, and it was terrific.

Great thread, I'm looking forward to hearing everyone's responses. H.P. Lovecraft is definitely my favorite horror writer. I've read everything nearly everything he's written, aside from essays and correspondences (sp?). Obviously, everyone loves Stephen King, and the handful of books I've read from him were great. I also just read the first five books in Brian Lumley's Necroscope series, which I thought were really cool. The classics, like Dracula and Frankestein, are always a good read. I never got into Anne Rice, but I've always enjoyed hearing everyone's take on the origin of vampires. I mentioned Brian Lumley a second ago, his idea as far as vampires go was pretty cool. I almost forgot Poe, lotsa good stuff there, too. There was another book I read a while back called In a Dark Place: The Story of a True Haunting....that was a great story, especially since it's supposed to be non-fiction. I like the "true" stories alot, although I guess I'm somewhat of a skeptic. That's another whole thread's worth of discussion, though.

Nice AnnieHall, I had almost completely forgotten about Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark...I remember reading those when I was younger, and they almost always had a little comedic element to the story to make them even better. Good call....now I'm waiting for someone to bring up R.L. Stine =)

Any fan of horror should definitely read Stephen King's IT. I know, it's a long book, and you've probably seen the movie starring John Ritter on Sunday afternoon television at one point or another. This movie does the book no justice at all. None. If you like horror, don't think, just go buy it. I'd also highly recommend The Shining, and a short story called The Man in the Black Suit, both by Stephen King.

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark...now those bring back memories of when I was a kid. I haven't seen one of those in years. Very cool.

Stephen King - Misery
R. L. Stevenson - Dr Jeckyll & Mr Hyde
Mary Shelley - Frankenstein
Edgar Allan Poe - The Premature Burial
