First pick of Superman

I agree, the first pic is horrible, if thats how it's gonna be then they can forget about me seeing it

the 2nd version is better

They could have at least gotten someone who was more muscular than that.

Well, to be fair, Reeves (God rest his soul) wasn't a muscular man either. I'm guessing anyone who has played Superman has been broad-shouldered and that was considered enough, but wasn't really because the rest of their bodies didn't fill out, which naturally made them lanky supermen.

Superman always looks better in comics and cartoons than he does in reality. He always will. The physical requirements are too demanding to be accurate. Unless you get a professional body builder or WWE wrestler to play the role, but then you are taking the gamble of whether or not they can act.

I agree the new costume isn't as faithful to the original and therefore perhaps shouldn't be used (even though it will be obviously), but it does look less cartoony-colored and more realistic. Are fans really going to not watch the movie over this? I think their complaints are more about the faithfulness to the original than the actual suit itself. Sort of like how people expected the new Superman to be to the physical likeness of Reeves purely out of love and admiration for him and what he did with the character and how he carried it.

I'm far more concerned with Superman himself, the acting, and the faithfulness to the plot and story as well as the other characters, not the costume.

Reeves looks great in those pictures and it's undisputable (and the suit is more in tune with the authentic Superman costume). I was refering mainly to arms and legs. Him, nor anyone could dupicate something that complicated. You're talking about a man who both has Superman's face and body, and whose suit will look just as it would in the comics. Thats not possible.

Being that Reeves was the closest thing we've had to an accurate Superman (thus far) and because of him as an actor and person I can see the desire to recreate the character in his image. But what I'm ultimately saying is that NO image is good enough to represent what we truely want to see physically even if the role and acting is won over beautifully.

This isn't like Batman. Batman is do-able as a character physically, as is Spiderman. Superman is touchy and alot of influence rests on his physical posture, and, quite simply, how strong he looks. If he doesn't look as physically imposing as he should, then that is a detractor, and a large one at that. And if people are willing to not see a movie over a costume, I would think making less of a stink about the man himself and how he fills out the costume makes even less sense.

My opinion:

Reeves looks alot better as Superman. He has this quiet, dignified calm about him (more like Superman). The new kid looks a little pompous and cocky in some of the pictures I've seen. Like he's just a pretty boy and thats it. He doesn't carry across the same feeling that he should as Superman.

Reeves was also in better shape. Looking at these pictures, theres no way to deny that.

To the new guy's credit however, his facial features look pretty good. They're strong and pronounced, just like Reeves's. I particularly see it as important that the chin looks strong and that he has a strong chin. That is one of Superman's more distinguishing facial features.

So they got that right.

Broad shoulders, again, they're important but they don't solve the other physical requirements. They don't do it with the new kid, whereas Reeves filled out quite nicely.

Chest and abdomen look good on both, but again, Reeves looks better. The new kid looks lanky, which is a problem I mentioned earlier, and is not a good thing as Superman is not lanky and cannot be seen as such because thats a detractor from his strength and presense. The new Superman looks more like a Superboy or teen, not a "man" for these reasons. I can't take him as seriously because he's not as physically imposing.

They both have good, strong looking legs.

Now imagine the new suit on Reeves. Does it look that bad now? No.

Why? Not because its Reeves, but because he physically makes the suit more appealing to look at, because he fills it out better. So I think the suit is actually less of an issue than people think.

Whats that saying? "Its the man that makes the suit, not the suit that makes the man" or something like that?

Its still a matter of opinion. I don't see why a new suit was necessary to begin with though. Why did they do that? They didn't do it with Spiderman. Actually, of all the superhero movies I've seen, I think the best costume job was for Spiderman.

I would say Batman, but it's gone under several different changes over the years, and the actual character went through different style changes himself over the course of time.

With the exception of Helen Slater looking so good - it has to be better than Supergirl.
