Maybe some of you have seen this story which has been floating around. There is a spa which uses doctor fish to nibble away the dead skin and callouses. For some people with ticklish feet the sensation is titillating.

Here is a link to the story. There is also a link to the stories video on the page. The announcer babe is pretty damn hot, a must see. Yes, she dips her feet in the tank and mentions the T word. :super_hap:

I posted about this same story last week in the General section of the theater!!!

Glad it made its way over to this end, too!!!

And...I still want a fishy pedicure!!

Update: I went for a swim in the Gulf of Mexico earlier, and got alittle fishy pedicure from four lovely silver/whitish fishies about the size of my palm. It was teh cute! :super_hap

It is not really a new concept, just a new use for the fish. They already use doctor fish on some medical patients

yikes no thanks for me..what if those fish decided to nibble a bit too vigorously????

They don't nibble to hard, they are actually very theraputic. They only want to eat the dead skin and nothing else.

Yeah, like QBBM above said, it's really almost imperceptible.

Granted, if you're out swimming in the Gulf and you feel it, at first you jump alittle. But even then, it's only in surprise.
As soon as you realize it's just little fish curious about you, it's really cute!

Right,I remember when I was a little girl my friend and I were on Vacation togethor and we were in the Gulf Of Mexico in some shallow water. We stood and sat very still and we let the fish nibble at our toes.It was fun.It didn't hurt.

Just make sure that the nibblers are not Jellyfish. Those really pack a punch.

Update:

I heard(word of mouth) that some areas are banning this spa treatment, as it's nearly impossible to keep the waters clean. Anyone hear similar things?

Anyway, those interested in trying it out may need to hurry!

Yes , they are banning it and Thank God !!!
Those Damn little fish were trying to put me out of my Job !!!!

I guess it would be difficult to keep it sanitary, but it is very effective

Sounds like one of those deals where - thanks to our overly litigious society, some farknud "might" conceivably sue us, so we cannot operate our tiny business legitimately.

Already, I envision a shady underground of cheap back-alley fish-pedicure parlors springing-up...

Thats not true, a pedicurist is effective because we can see and logically determine what degree by location of the callus build up should be removed. A fish can't

If they do spring up , people like myself will expose them and close them down. This I promise you. The sanitation risk is too high for this type of practice. In my buisness its hard enough to fight exposure to foot related bacteria and funguses the old fashioned way , let alone making sure a shop is using sanitary fish.

I think it's silly though. They should be able to operate.I mean it's not that bad.I know there are sanitation risks but I am sure they can figure something out.If pedicurists have a problem well they need to get over it because these people have every right to open their own business and besides people who do see these kind of places were not looking for pedicures they have medical conditions that the doctor fishes help.I have seen this before on TV,they had certain skin conditions. It was not a beauty thing it was a medical thing.I tell you the Government is acting to much like nannies

If they are looking to rectify a medical condition via the use of these fish , fine and good, then they can seek the use of this procedure from a podiatrist, not from a nail salon that may or maynot be upholding strict sanitary guidelines.
I see everyday, people from all over the country, affected with vungal issues from some of these salons in malls and fly by night shops where sanitary methods are lax. I can't imagine compounding this problem with proper fish management disciplines or I should say "lack of "
Pedicurists like myself do have a problem with this because we feel it is not only our job to administer pedicures, but also to look after foot health concerns and laws pertaining to our profession that effects every American.

What do you mean, they got some kind of disease from the place on their foot,a secondary infection?

Well, not secondary, but the answer is a BIG YEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSS.
This is how people get funguses and baterial related conditions. I take extreme measures between each client I do to sanitize and sometimes re-sanitize everything I work with, foot tubs, whirlpool spas, and all implements.
If these problems are not in check , they can affect me and the person I'm working on, even getting into tiny cracks in the skin and the hypernychium of the nails.

omg!Don't these places try and take measures as well?I would like to think most do.

I would like to think most do as well, but the fact is there are many who don't, like some of these places in your malls where the customer turn over rate is so fast, they really skimp on sanitation or ignore it altogether sometimes. I mean, nobody can guarantee baterial infection can't be transmitted even in the most cleanest salon, but be very careful where you go nevertheless.

Wow! So you really ARE a pedicurist in meatspace? That must be especially gratifying. I mean, to have the foot-fetish and have that as a profession. I'm sure there's many a time it's not so wonderful, but ah, I bet you have some stories to tell, nonetheless. Ever get tickles in? Maybe at the start, to loosen up the ladies for their pedicure-to-come?

I think the board of health should get involved and make them follow guidelines but fish are very difficult to care for and these are salt water fish so it must be so hard to keep everything clean.I was trying to think of a way but I can't think of one that wouldn't kill the fish. They could try heavy filtration but even then there is no guarantee

Its very gratifying, but I don't " loosen " them up with tickles. Most of the time they warn me in advance, although I still get to tickle my share of feet on the job.

Still the best thing is not to find a way to sanitize the treatment, but not use it at all. A Pedicurist is always your best bet.
