The date of this book isn't clear, but from the footnotes it seems to be around 1900 -- also, the fact that a 28 year old is called a "lady" is very late Victorian. Given that context, this gal's statement that she was "to some extent still" "fond of being tickled," is an amazing confession. For her to say that she bribed her sister into tickling her toes when she was 12 is one thing... but to say she still enjoys it as an adult must mean she was REALLY into it!
