I can't say the phrase "Free Safety" without attaching the noun "Ronnie Lott" to it. A very deadly position when the right guy's there.
If I ever played the game on an organized level (and "beer" does not qualify as really organized, does it?), I'd love to be in the secondary. Wreaking so much havoc. It's a beautiful thing....

Except...

So far as I know Ronnie Lott never played Free Safety. He started as a corner then converted to Strong Safety...

Free Safety??.........

....well, we have Sheffield United at Pride Park next weekend, and the only way to be really safe is not to go to the game. The old bill reckons there is going to be a lot of trouble, all the boozers in town will be shut both before and after the game, just to make sure they all piss off back to Sheffield! last year they wrecked a couple of pubs on Ashbourne road before the scuffers caught up with them. So my view is, yes, free safety is a good thing but it wont stop me guys! I will be there in the trenches rooting for the RAMS!!! (the real RAMS I mean, not your armour clad gay boys).

Lott played some Free safety for the 49ers. later on, he played strong safety, but he did play some free safety

Ok, Red. Let your "Rams" come up here and play without "armour" at Gillette Stadium in two feet of snow in those cute little butt-shorts.

😀

Wrong!!!

SAn Fran didn't have a Free Safety in their system. Only the press called Lott a Free Safety. San Fran had a strong Safety and a Safety. In their defense the Strong Safety lined up on whatever side the most receivers were on, the Safety lined up on the Tight End Side. Lott rarely lined up straight over a tight end (where most strong Safeties line up) By strict definition Lott was a Strong Safety, and in fact San Fran called him a Strong SAfety, but many reporters called him a Free Safety because he wasn't lined up over the TE. Usually the SS is slower than the FS. Lott was in fact slower than the other safety. He never played FS. San Fran didn't have one. Later in his career San Fran changed defensive schemes and Lott became known as a Strong Safety. It's much like Cleveland in the 60s. Jimmy Brown was known as a Fullback, even though he didn't play the position. He was bigger than his running mate, so therefore he must be a Fullback. When Brown retired and Leroy Kelly took over, they started calling Kelly a Halfback, even though he played the exact same position as Jim Brown.

so, Lott was essentially playing the free safety spot, but his "official" title was strong safety. you said it yourself. a strong safety typically lines up over the TE. Lott lined up over the receivers and the other safety lined up over the TE. Lott may not have been "free safety", but he essentially filled the role. question though. if Lott was slower than the other safety, why would he line up with the receivers and not the TE?

No I Didn't Say That...

What I said was Lott lined up over the side the most receivers were on. This is in fact the strong side. Up until the early 80s the Tight End usually lined up on the side with a flanker. The most receivers were on that side so it traditionally became the strong side. Since the other side usually had a slpit receiver yor faster safety provided additional coverage on that side. The split was usually faster than the flanker and had more room to operate. So you had a Free Safety to help out on the weak side.
When the 80s came about the Tight end usually lined up alone. with a split and a slot on the other side. This side then became the Strong Side. Teams they ran these sorts of sets tended to rely on either misdirection or illegal pics to free up the slot or the split. It became more important to have a big strong safety over on that side to fight through pics, and to provide coverage if the Tight end came over on a cross. Because the wide outs relied more on guile, and brute force to get open it became more important to have a bigger, slower and harder hitting safety to keep things in line.
Since the Tight end was lined up alone (and in many cases there might be a flanker or instead of the TE a split on that side, it became more important to get a quicker faster individual over there.
So Ronnie Lott was a Strong Safety. in San Frans terminology he was a strong safety because he usually played on the "Strong " (side with most players or receivers) Side.

This isn't high school football we're talking about rubes. It's the Pros.

Ok, what does everyone think of the position of Linebacker?

Thew most exciting part about linebacker is stuffing a runner on fourth down. I think the secondary is involved in the hardest hits because of the momentum by the receivers, but a linebacker is involved more of the plays (running).
