I am keen to find out more about novels written on the Star Wars subject, without being novellisations of the films. How many are there? What are they about? What space do they occupy in the Star Wars continuum? Thanks in advance peeps.

Man, that's a tall order...

In general, the Star Wars novels have continued the saga past the Battle of Endor. There is a traceable series of events, and one novel does not counteract any others. All books written in the Star Wars series get approved by LucasBooks so as not to disrupt the history.

The current series, New Jedi Order, takes us past the final peace between the Republic and the Imperial Remnant and into a war with beings from outside the galaxy.

If I were to suggest something for you to start with, I'd reccomend the Thrawn trilogy by Timothy Zahn. It picks up a few years after Return of the Jedi, covers the birth of Han and Leia's twins, the introduction of Mara Jade and Talon Karrde and the Chiss. Pretty much about the Empire's last Grand Admiral taking it to the newly-formed Republic. The books are "Heir to the Empire", "Dark Force Rising" and "The Last Command". There are many, many novels written between this trilogy and the Thrawn Duology ("Specter of the Past, "Vision of the Future") which wraps everything up before the New Jedi Order starts. You can read these out of order if you want, you might miss a few references, but once you start, things make sense. Many of these are series in themselves...like the Jedi Academy trilogy and the Black Fleet Crisis trilogy.

Check the Star Wars website for links to lists of all SW written works. There are novels also covering the Pre-Clone Wars era.

Thanks Dave. What I'm gonna try and do, is to read all the different novels in chronological order. (As near as can be.) I know there's quite a few novels that are interspersed between the films themselves, (I know of one that recounts Obi-Wan's adventures with Qui-Gon Jinn, prior to TPM, and of course books like Splinter Of The Mind's Eye) even if it does confuse the plot a bit.

I've been attempting to put together as accurate and complete a chronolgy as possible, incorporating not only the films and novels but the comics, animated series, games, etc. as well. It covers about five thousand years, as well as apocrypha which doesn't really fit in with established continuity very well. (I'm thinking specifically of some old Russ Manning newspaper strips and a sextet of juvenile novellas involving the Emperor's illegitimate three-eyed mutant son and Jedi grandson...)

If you wish, I can post it again later tonight. Plot descriptions would take some considerable further time...

not just novels

the comic books also carry it on fairly well by darkhorse but ive been away from comics so long, im almost forgettin who exists in marvel and DC. There are a couple big collection books that have the bios\histories of EVERY star wars character, including the sons and daughters of Solo and son of Luke and even the biggest "non character" in the stories, Mara Jade. So if yer lookin for a somewhat brief history of Star wars before the movies\after the movies, that is a good pick up, the name i forget but i was a good read. But what do i know, Im a Trekkie\trekker 😀

If you like the comics, Dark Horse is releasing two long serials simultaneously...Republic, which will focus on the Jedi during the height of the Clone Wars and Empire, which will focus on the machinations behind the birth of the Empire.

Both look very good.

The Chronology

Great Maker, it's complete!

After consulting a couple of websites, I think I've finally got this thing as complete and accurate as I can get it. Some things are hard to place, notably A.C. Crispin's Han Solo Trilogy, which spans a decade. The Lando Calrissian Trilogy and the Brian Daley Han Solo Trilogy actually occur between chapters of the Crispin books.

and people tell us that we have too much time on our hands

very complete list u got there, now question is "who owns every single copy of that list?" 🙂

Whew...hats off to you MKN for a thorough job indeed! I never cared for some of the earlier writings that the series spawned - I couldn't get into a rhythm with the words of authors like Zahn et. al. I do enjoy readin K.J. Anderson's novels. His storytelling abilities flow more smoothly and more to my liking. R.A. Salvatore handled the "novel" Attack of the Clones from the screenplay - not an easy task - but his style left me wanting to hurl the book across the room. I could never figure out if he was painting a picture, telling a story, or talking in circles. It probably wasn't so much his fault as the material he had to work with. Still, I can't say that I'd ever endeavor to read all the other works to have a better grasp of the galaxy and beyond. It would be way to much work, and I'm not sure how entertaining it would be...unless you consider root canals fun. Good luck, Jim.

I doubt if they'll sell them over here Dave. 🙁

That's the beauty of the internet BigJim...ebay has over 1,000 items under comics, Star Wars. I never thought of the comics myself. But I love the challenge of trying to complete a collection. Happy hunting.
