Who of the early electronic groups do you prefer:

Tangerine Dream or Kraftwerk?

I'm partial to TD,especially the analogue years pf 1974-1977,when there Live shows were very much improvised pieces.
LONG LIVE THE "MELLOTRON" and "THE ELECTRONIC SEQUENCER"!!!!

Actually I vote for early Tangerine Dream. In the last year, I've gotten "Alpha Centauri", "Atem", and their masterpiece "Zeit". These are perfect cds to just relax and fuzz out to:happyfloa.

Some of "Alpha" & "Atem" were interesting and somewhat haunting, but, I just couldn't get into "Zeit" .I was younger then.Perhaps I should try again.

I go for the era between "Phaedra" and "Stratosphere"
"Ricochet Part 2" is classic

I would not actualy put Kraftwerk in the new age catogory. I almost didnt even look at this thread! Im glad I did now🙂 Kraftwerk is and will always be pure eurodisco at it's finest. They had a string of disco hits in the clubs (real disco, not pop bee gees radio crap) between 1977 - 1980. "Trans Europe Express", "The Robots", "The Model"..just to name a few top disco play tracks.

If this is what your calling new age, I highly recomend checking out Giorgio Moroder's 1977 LP "From Here To Eternity" (originaly just known as artist Giorgio) as it is Kraftwerk to a higher level and well, when I would spin private gig's to the younger techno/house crowds..id always slip some stuff from this LP in and the kids would love it and think it was new stuff...they didnt believe me when I told them it was disco LOL. Anyhow, Kraftwerk rules!😀

One more adding LP to check out (if its been reissued to CD yet..I heard rumors it was going to be..) is Black Devil "Disco Club" from 1977 as well. Same type music as the above😉

A long time ago a friend told me Kraftwerk had a song with the lyrics, "... I am the operator of my pocket calculator...". I never heard it. Is that from a good album? (I've heard the song 'Autobahn' and like it).

The track is called "Pocket Calculator" and it's off the LP "Computer World". Another classic🙂

I DID hear that album! I'm gonna have to buy that one, too.
When I think of New Age music, I think of the music I play for my massage sessions. I don't know if that's what this topic pertains to. How about Kitaro or Phillip Glass? Do they count?

OMGGGG you mentioned Kitaro! Kitaro I guess could be new age? But in the disco scene there was a whole part of it called morning music. Basicly, its where the true aspect of what they call "rave" today all began and well...some artists that used to be played to kinda mess with people's heads in the mix (I did it as well) were Kitaro, Tomita, Jean Michael Jarre...those are some names of the morning music thing..and of corse..Kraftwerk got into that catogory on some tracks. If your interested to learn bout this morning music thing you can check out this:

http://www.hyperactivemedia.com/5am

youll see theres alot to it and its deep shit! 🙂

Dskodj, I just checked out that site. That scene looks like fun. Those DJ's are a lot more advanced than my DJ style was. I'd just play the song, find another song that would mix with it and let it roll. Didn't always work well. I was in it for the love of the music. I may have sucked technically, but I got people dancing.
What about Yanni? Would that be New Age, or is that similar to calling Kenny G. jazz?

Well it is all about the love of the music and all the mixing styles talked about on that page are all part of the love of the music..its kinda like a journey..I actualy mix like that (also, DJ Bobby Viteritti who has a spot on that page was my teacher..he's a great man and friend). Its not really as hard and technical as it may sound on that page, its just all in the feeling in your mind and soul and basicly..letting the records themselves, the music, the pitch dial and your mind and your hands all become one. Long live the 5am scene and the true meaning of disco🙂

As for Yanni? Well, he would be more classical honestly but, they do put him in the New Age catogory. I actualy as a private joke with a fellow remixer I worked with a while back remixed a Yanni track with a Cerrone track with a simmaler title and made them one LOL, was funny.
