I noticed the recent Anagram threads and contests and thought I'd throw this out there. It's a song by Rush from the Presto album, and shows just how big a freakin' genius Neil Peart is at writing lyrics...

ANAGRAM (for Mongo)

There's a snake coming out of the darkness
Parade from paradise
End the need for Eden
Chase the dreams of merchandise

There is tic and toc in atomic
Leaders make a deal
The cosmic is largely comic
A con they couldn't conceal

There is no safe seat at the feast
Take your best stab at the beast
The night is turning thin
The saint is turning to sin

Raise the art to resistance
Danger dare to be grand
Pride reduced to humble pie
Diamonds down to sand

Take heart from earth and weather
The brightness of new birth
Take heart from the harvest
Shave the harvest from the earth

Reasoning is partly insane
Image just an eyeless game
The night is turning thin
The saint is turning to sin

Miracles will have their claimers
More will bow to Rome
He and she are in the house
But there's only me at home

Rose is a rose of splendor
Posed to respond in the end
Lonely things like nights,
I find, end finer with a friend

I hear in the rate of her heart
A tear in the heat of the art

The night turns thin
The saint turns to sin

very clever, shame that guy doesnt come here and compete, hed wilnfor sure, and give P50 a run for his money too. thanks for noticing by the way , i fort no one cared lol. 😀

RUSH - for my money, the most genius (pound for pound) of any rock group that made it. Three guys of unbelievable talent. Even their mediocre stuff is way above other's product.

Thanks for sharing the lyrics. I don't have this album and it might have escaped my notice otherwise.

Oh, if you like Rush, by all means get Presto. It was one of thier relatively unnoticed albums (although by Rush standards, it still sold a few million copies). It was right after the two fusion-synth albums Power Windows and Hold Your Fire and before the begginings of thier return to the groove-rock roots of thier past. Presto is probably the "jazziest" of the Rush albums and has some incredible basslines.

Can you point out two or three of the anagrams ?

The only obvious ones I see are "Earth" and "Heart" in the same line. Are the anagrams strewn about ? Are they contained in the same verses ? Is one in one line contained in another line in another verse ?

Give me a clue, I would like to see a few of these, and I'm approximately totally missing it

P50,

In anagram puzzles (at least the ones I play) you needn't use the entire word in your anagram. Although he does not need to use the entire word, he sometimes has in his lyric:

miracles - claimers

The "genius" I appreciate is when he uses part of a word to play on another word in the same lyric, such as:

Reasoning is partly insane

In this instance, not only is there an anagram word-play involved... the words reasoning and insane are related by concept too. IMHO, The impressive thing is that this isn't a cheap shot like the word "sane" would be in relation to the word "insane".

Of course, the genius I'm applauding is just my opinion. It's not like I've measured the man's IQ.

A lot of these are inferred references. The line I really like is "Image just an eyeless game". Of course, what he really means, in an anagram sense is that the word "game" is an anagram of "image" without the "I". I-less game...get it?

These aren't strict anagrams in the true sense of the words, but you have to read between all of the lines to truly get it. The wrods that aren't part of the anagrams themselves actually set up the anagrams.

Genius. 😎
