Extremely sad news..

www.mlb.com.

Former LA Dodgers and Oakland A's pitcher Bob Welch has passed away at age 57. Sources said a cause of Mr Welch's death was undetermined.

Mr Welch was a great pitcher. I read his book "Five O Clock Comes Early" written about his struggles with alcoholism.

R. I. P Mr Welch.

This is very sad news. I remember him as a member of the 1981 World Champion Dodgers.
Welch won 115 games for the Dodgers and was a member of the 1981 World Series champions, and will be remembered for striking out Reggie Jackson to end Game 2 of the 1978 World Series, won by Los Angeles, 4-3.

"The Los Angeles Dodgers are saddened to learn of the passing of Bob Welch," Dodgers president and chief executive officer Stan Kasten said. "He was one of the greatest competitors to wear the Dodger uniform. Dodger fans will always remember his confrontation with Yankee great Reggie Jackson in Game 2 of the 1978 World Series, when the 21-year-old rookie struck out Jackson to end the game."
Rest In Peace, Bob Welch.

Never saw him of course but from what my dad tells me he was a great pitcher and his strikeout of Reggie Jackson in the 1978 World Series is a classic October moment.

RIP Bob

Had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Welch, when I first began throwing batting practice, for that '81 Dodgers' team!!! He was a very nice guy and one of the "jokers" of that pitching staff!! He even gave me a couple pairs of brand new "Mizuno" cleats, for my own use!!! He was a class act then...and went on to have a decent career with the Oakland A's...earning the Cy Young Award...after winning 27 games in '90!!! (still the most wins by any pitcher, since Steve Carlton in 1972) Won another World Series ring with the A's in '89...after losing the previous year to the Dodgers!!!

Great guy with a pretty good career!!! R.I.P. Bob!!!

I'd be lying if I said I remember him exactly... Although I do know that I've seen him play. I've been an Athletics fan since 89 or 88... can't remember when I became a fan. I was born in 83. I just remember it was before 89 because I remember watching the 89 WS even though I was only 6. That was an exciting world series. I do know that he was a great pitcher and was an awesome edition to the Athletics pitching unit. But I thought it was only 25 games, not 27...

I heard he died of a heart attack but I could be wrong.
