'Magic' lotions, tickling, and, er, ears

The erotic entertainment industry, as a stock cliche of the recession-crippled 1990s had it, was "recession-proof." It alone thrived while other sectors languished. But no industry, not even this one, is complacency-proof. Even sex, blandly packaged, palls in the end. "To keep on offering the same fare as before," warns Shukan Jitsuwa, "means to sink inexorably into decay."

Is this a danger? It seems not. In the sex industry, innovation reigns supreme. Originality bubbles up from the depths of soapland. New services are springing up everywhere. The ultimate erotic experience may in principle be unattainable, but in Japan you need never be bored seeking it. At any rate, Shukan Jitsuwa's tour of the country in search of the latest stimulations comes across as a rollicking good time.
Osaka's "Kyujo OS" ("Kyujo" being an apparent reference to the Constitution's antiwar Article 9) is an old "strip theater" with a novel idea: why not combine striptease with kyabakura-style companionship? Kyabakura (cabaret clubs) furnish hostesses to pour drinks, talk provocatively, and generally help clients pass the time of night. Kyujo OS's notion was to have hostesses join the men watching the strippers. "Really," marvels one satisfied customer, "it's just like enjoying striptease at a kyabakura! The dancers seemed even more wonderful than usual!"
Entertainment fit for royalty at relatively plebeian cost: a 6,000 yen cover charge, plus drinks.
An establishment called Wing, also in Osaka, has refined the art of "health" massage to the point of having a masseuse spread a tonic lotion all over the client's body with her breasts. The lotion washes off easily, we are told, and -- a point of no small importance to the man whose wife waits at home -- is perfectly odorless. Price: 13,000 yen for 60 minutes.
"Customers who telephone to inquire about the lotion's health-giving properties come and find themselves absolutely hooked," says a 23-year-old masseuse with evident pride. "They tell me it feels so good."
Space constraints preclude more than a tantalizing mention of a Nagoya deaikei (encounter) club called Healing Space, where Eros is worshipped via a peculiar ritual whose central feature is the meticulous cleaning of the client's ears.
We turn instead to a "service" Shukan Jitsuwa assures us is unique in Japan. We can well believe it. Located in Tokyo's Shibuya, it is known as "Kusuguri Takuhaibin" -- Tickle Delivery Service. The range of erotic craving -- "mania" is the ubiquitous Japanese English term -- never ceases to amaze. "The play involves tickling a girl's underarms, or the soles of her feet, or wherever, until she's laughing uncontrollably," explains "Miyamoto-san," the man who runs the place. "To put it simply, it's S & M without pain."
"Delivery" suggests the dispatch of sex workers to private homes, but the action sketchily described by Shukan Jitsuwa seems to be taking place on the premises, where the paraphernalia on hand runs from handcuffs to blindfolds to feathers. There is a Japanese saying to the effect that when your eyes are closed, your other senses kick in with extra intensity. "If so," muses the magazine, "might it be possible to reach the heights of pleasure being tickled with a feather while blindfolded?"
It seems a possibility worth exploring, if you have 32,000 yen to spare for two hours.
