Tonight was the end of a extraordinary show. Friday Night Lights on NBC/Direct TV. I am really bothered that this show ended. I do not watch too much television, but I made damn sure I watched this show each week. It was wonderfully written, and the acting was tremendous. People think that is was nothing but football, but the show really revolved around the lives of a Texas small town and their passion for football, but it was their lives OFF the field that made this show.
I am involved with assisting a high school football team (my alma mater), where the passion of the school's football team is felt throughout the community so I could relate to the characters. It really sucks that this show had to end. You fall in love with the characters and wish to see them go on. The show did last for five seasons, where some of the characters "graduated", but they just put in new characters and the show kept churning along with great action and drama. It touched so many subjects that young teens face from teen pregnancy, to disabilities, to fitting in, to having to work to keep your family afloat, taking care of a sick relative, drugs use, alcohol use, escaping from gangs, education, etc.
Then there was the football part. I couldn't help but get into their "games". It was exciting to see the last season of the show, where a team that was considered "economically poor" rise above their own personal lives to win at football. Football can be the ultimate family builder where young men can forge a bond that can never be broken. I see that in my real life with my high school, so seeing it on television made me really relate.
The show survived five seasons. Dammit, it really should have lasted longer. This reality show crap on television is ridiculous. Whatever happened to good solid shows with great writing and great acting? This really does suck.
My favorite characters were Matt Saracen (Zach Gilford), Tim Riggins (Taylor Kitsch), Coach Eric Taylor (Kyle Chandler) Smash Williams (Gaius Charles), Luke Cafferty (Matt Lauria), and Vince Howard (Michael B. Jordan). All the other characters were great as well.
Man, this sucks. Anyone else watch this show?
