Yes, they will do just about anything. Without the queen the colony will disperse and die. If they try to join another colony they will be attacked and killed.
 
Weird...because I didn't think the queen left the hive. Maybe Welsh bees are different...

I've never heard of that either. I do know that in the spring carpenter ants and termites exhibit a behavior known as swarming. They have wings and leave the main colony to establish a new one, then die off. That is their only purpose. When I worked in pest control I saw sides of houses and buildings covered with them. Maybe bees do the same thing.
