I think have my new TV addiction. I'm not one to usually keep track of anything on TV...usually I just get collections of seasons of some show I like on DVD...to watch at my leisure.

But HBO's adaption of George R. R. Martin's epic series A Song of Ice and Fire...namely "Game of Thrones"...may be the most incredibly written show since Sci-Fi's Battlestar Galactica.

I am utterly addicted to this new show. It seems each season will only consist of ten episodes, but will cover the events of one book in the "Ice and Fire" saga. The characters are complex and interwoven...set in a world of a depth not seen since Tolkien's Middle Earth. Speaking of Middle Earth...it is wonderful to see Sean Bean (Boromir of Lord of the Rings fame) in another iconic role perfectly suited for his acting chops.

Anyone else caught up in GoT yet?

Unfortunately I'm not somewhere that I can watch HBO, so I won't be able to see the series unless/until it comes out on DVD or something. However, I've been hearing loads of good things about it... the only "complaint" I've heard thus far is that Sansa's a little old for her part, but otherwise, everything else is amazing. I wish I could watch it. 🙂

Here's my big question. See, I want to be able to watch and enjoy a fantasy series. That would be wonderful. But since I keep hearing it compared to Battlestar Galactica's remake, would you actually recommend Game of Thrones to someone who thought BSG was a load of convoluted garbage, with "character depth" and acting replaced by "Okay, now yell a lot and bitch about stuff, then have sex?"

Game of Thrones has been an awesome series so far. Though I have not read the series my friend has and says that they are staying pretty loyal to the book. The scope of the production and acting have been fantastic. I am going to watch this series regularly.

I haven't heard anyone I know comparing it to BSG. My only advice on that is to watch it yourself and make your own decision. I can say that the story is involved and deeper in depth than BSG. The characters are being developed well and all have a part in driving the story. BSG was more about reacting to the battle with the Cylons and finding Earth as it should be. Game of Thrones is far more character driven with each character pushing the plot in their own way. Honestly, I don't see much of a comparison between the two series.

THANK YOU GOD! FINALLY I'VE FOUND SOMEONE WHO SHARES THIS SENTIMENT! Bella...can I marry you? ^_~

Bah. There is only ONE BSG and it has LORNE GREENE IN IT!

You guys aren't the only ones with the BSG sentiment. I really wanted to like that show. Hard to find good scifi or fantasy these days. Haven't really heard much of this show and definitely have been soooorely dissapointed by US TV these days. I think the only thing I even have my ears perk up for is Dexter and who knows if the quality will last one that.

Hope you're right FeatherD, going to be definitely giving this a look at least. Any place to stream this online at all?

Only if we have a real Colonial wedding. We can find a house on Leonis and get a daggit. 😉

That's exactly how I feel, which is terrible since I love genre shows. It's why I want to see Game of Thrones and enjoy it, but I want to avoid it if it'll be just another disappointing, modern "shout fest" style show.

I love this show, I am hooked. I think I like it better than True BLood.
ITA.

I didn't think HBO could come up with a more interesting series than True Blood but damned if they didn't hit an outadapark homerun with Game of Thrones. This series ROCKS! :cool

Just FYI, Bella...I only compared it to Sci-Fi's BSG because of how much I liked it.

Other than that, you really can't compare the two at all. In fact, while I stand outside much of sci-fi's *purist* community and stand by my love of the new BSG...Game of Thrones is probably even better in my eyes. The acting is beyond top-notch, the character development is extremely deep and each episode so far seems to end with that hand-over-the-mouth "they're ending it HERE?!? After THAT?!?" sentiment.

I would strongly suggest you check it out, you'd probably like it. The only thing is, you'll need to have OnDemand or something like that to play catch up on the five episodes so far. There is NO WAY to pick this up mid-stream.

Another thing I really enjoy about GoT is how they abandon the usual "romantic love" focus of traditional "fantasy" and go more for the realistic sexual themes and treatment of sex as hobby, trade and general pastime. It's not pornographic...just realistic.

here in italy GoT isn't out yet, but i've red all the books they published ^_^ it's greaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat i love that story

Let's put it this way: when you see a guy get his head chopped off in the first five minutes of the pilot episode, you know you're in for a real ride. :lol (Especially when we still don't yet if the chopper was a man or a demon.)

Yeah, they really have a knack for ending each episode at good moment. It is a wonderful tour de force of Byzantine political intrigue.

They are only five episodes in so it is not a major investment of time to determine whether or not you want to watch the series.

Loved the books and I've seen the first episode so far. It really captures the gritty (by which I mean realistic, what I imagine 'real' medieval stuff was like) fantasy nature of the books, and so yes, there's a fair amount of casual beheading, sex, and violence but it's never done in such a way that it doesn't make sense.

Having read the books does mitigate the twisting suspense at the end of the episodes, since you know what's going to happen. 😛

Very true.

That was one complaint from my friend. He already knows everyone who is going to die, so while he likes the story he is disappointed that they are really sticking to the story. There is no suspense. :lol

Heard nothing but good things about this show, like literally not a single bad thing. Gosh I hope this is what I've been waiting for. Sean Bean being in the show lends it some real credit too, surprised by this. Here goes nothing. <3
