Giant, I mean GIANT, alligator on golf course is apparently real?

I saw a picture of this, Jeff, and yes, apparently it was real.

This isnt the first time I've heard of something like this happening.

One time, I heard a story, where one of my great uncles was on the golf course, and an aligator was looking up at him from the water, and started climbing out of the water.

I mean think of it, many of the golf courses, are located near the aligators "habitat", so to speak. (Canals)

Saw this on the news this morning, that's a monster. Oh, go get next to it? Right. He should have offered to take the pictures while tough guy got next to it.

Remember that commercial with the giant octopus in a golf course water hazard? That was hilarious.

Looking into this further, apparently this is fairly common in florida, and this is a known animal at this golf course.

It's about the size of the largest gator ever recorded - they estimate this one at around fifteen feet, and the largest one ever caught was about seventeen feet.

I guess humans are in a weird safety zone where we're too big to be considered a convenient meal, but too small to be considered dangerous, so they just saunter about their business and ignore us.

When I lived in Houston, back in the 80s, it was not unusual for people to find an alligator in their swimming pool or driveway. Houston is laced with bayous and gators love them. Regarding size, the Louisiana state record is 19.2 feet and around 2,000 pounds. Now, that dates to 1890 but 13 and 14 foot gators are still caught there.

As far as critters such as these, you probably have little to worry about unless you are in the Southeast US. Even then, I wouldn't bet that one wouldn't try to come after you, especially a biggun. I've also heard that they aren't that smart - no canine/feline-type moves, so if you move perpendicular to their advance you'll avoid being caught by one. Of course, I ain't gonna be the one to go out and try to prove/disprove that concept.

Someone I know posted this picture on facebook. She lives near that golf course and says he's a regular - his name is Goliath 🙂

Jeff is correct about this being a common sight in Florida.

The incident where my great uncle saw the gator on the course was in Fort Lauderdale.

My grandparents lived in Deerfield Beach.

There was once a story I read there where a gator was causing trouble in one of the canals in Deerfield. They couldnt seem to tame it, so, it had to be dragged out of the canal when it wouldnt calm down, and unfortunately had to be shot and put down/killed.

I used to visit Florida often when my grandparents lived there, and they warned me to be careful of gators.

hell i been looking all over for him, cant believe he made it from ny to Flordia :dom:

Goliath it is, then. That prehistoric creature's name is whatever it wants it to be as far as I'm concerned. 🙂

I read somewhere they also found a Nile Crocodile in Florida. Alligators tend not to be very dangerous, but Nile crocs are predatory creatures, so that is quite disturbing.

Yep, typical lumbering snowbird retiree. Look at 'im taking his sweet time crossing the course; bet he never goes over 50 in the left lane of I-4 either.

I feel like animal wise, Florida has become the closest thing we have to Australia.
