Saw an editorial cartoon in the paper today....

A bunch of firemen were standing in a long line and one was speaking into a walkie-talkie....he was saying "We've reached the top."

There were standing in line...TO ENTER THE GATES OF HEAVEN.

Beautiful. Simply beautiful. Saints, every single one of them.

School fundraisers are a way of life here, because funding is less than adequate. Not in Mountain Brook, Alabama though. It's where the Birmingham old money lives. Nothing so low class as washing cars or selling frozen pizzas for their kids - Daddy just writes a check.

Or until last Saturday anyway. A dozen pretty rich girls from MBHS washed my car in a church parking lot, collecting money for the FDNY Survivors Fund. Had flags out and the Top Gun sound track going on a boom box - they did it up right.

God Bless America. Maybe there's hope for us yet.
