Greatest Pitcher of the last 30 years

Just wondering which pitcher you think is the best we've seen over his whole career in the last 30 years.

Greg Maddux; Pedro Martinez; Clemens (Pre-steroids); Randy Johnson; Nolan Ryan????

I'm not gonna include glavine cuz I just don't think he ever dominated like the others although he remained consistant. Schilling didn't have enough dominating seasons to make this list. I'm aware pedro don't have 300 career wins, but that is due to injuries more than anything else.

Doc Gooden in the 80's, Clemens for his various runs (don't care about roids, MLB unleashed that dragon and let it flourish), Maddux in the 90's, Roy Halladay (does not get enough credit even with a bad team), Tim Linecum is one to watch for the present and future.

Pitcher who used steroids: Roger Clemens
Pitcher who didn't: Greg Maddux
Closer/reliever: Mariano Rivera (without question!)

Greatest pitchers with short[er] careers/dominate peaks:
Pedro, Fernando Valenzuela, Dwight Gooden, Brandon Webb

Greatest pitchers who had no business hanging around as long as they did:
Bruce Chen, Tomo Ohka and Tanyon Sturtze

Greatest wastes of money:
Ben McDonald, Denny Neagle, Mike Hampton, Chan Ho Park, Barry Zito

Greatest pitcher that never pitched:

I'm going to say Greg Maddux, and not just because I'm a Braves fan, and he pitched for the Braves for 11 years. The numbers on Greg don't lie.

355-227 record (The 355 wins are eighth all time, by the way)

3.16 E.R.A. (It was under 3 for most of his career, until going up the last few years, when he had some high 3 and low 4 E.R.A. years).

3,371 K's

Four Cy Youngs.

Greg's stats were amazing. He finished eighth all time in wins, and tenth in strikeouts. He did it all with a fastball that never topped 88 mph, and, while spending most of his career, in a five man pitching rotation, where his pitch count was monitored. While he "only " had two twenty win seasons, Greg consistently won between 15 and 19 games for many years of his career.

Many of the other greats had fastballs of 90 mph plus or greater. Greg never did. Nolan Ryan, Randy Johnson, et al, could all blow guys away. Greg won all 355 games, with finesse, and guile.

For all these reasons, I choose Greg Maddux as the all time best pitcher.

Seaver, Ryan, Carlton, Gibson, Fidrych, Glavine ( because he won 300 games HONESTLY ) unlike the guy you put in there. Schilling deserves to be on that list as well.

Also lets put Gooden, Cone, Pedro, Verlander is moving into the conversation as well as Felix Hernandez, C.C Sabathia, Roy Halladay, Johan Santana. Also you throw in John Smoltz, Greg Maddux, Randy Johnson.


But let's be fair...Clemens does NOT deserve to be on this list. We don't quite know how long he cheated. Amazing you put Clemens in yet you won't put Glavine in. Your thought process is Skewed.

Let's count Clemens but let's hope that Pujols is cheating so we don't count his numbers. DUH!!!

To go back to the Original Post, I think Roy Halladay has the potential to be considered one of the greatest when he's all said and done. I love Timmy Lincecum, but I'm still dreading the day his arm falls off during one of his frenetic windups.

But, Jesus, look at Randy Johnson's numbers in his prime. This guy was striking out 300 in a season when 200 was considered top of the line. If I had to choose one pitcher in his prime to pitch one World Series game for my team, it would be hard to argue against Randy Johnson.

It's funny, because while Johnson surely dominated in timeframe that you list, he already had a history of domination while w/ the M's (and 1/2 a season w/ Houston). He had two different peaks and the 2nd was somehow better than the first... rare.

Randy is surely on the short list of greats, especially since he pitched so well (dominate!) into his late 30's.

In terms of style, Maddux was the best 'finess' pitcher and Randy the best 'power' pitcher.

And I think that bird he killed during spring training would agree (God rest its soul...). 😀
