Ok, with the playoffs just about upon us, let's talk Super Bowl. Which one of the best games (meaning you can forget about the Niners 55-10 blowout of the Broncos) do you consider the best of all time?

Patriots over Rams (2001) - The heavily favored Rams' prolific passing game is kept in check all game by Bill Bellichik's extensive dime packages. With the Pats leading most of the game, Kurt Warner leads the Rams to a rally to tie the game and make a nation cry "here we go". But 2nd-string phenom Tom Brady leads the Pats 80-some yards in the final minute, ending with Adam Viniateri's last-second field goal to win the game as heavy underdogs.

Rams over Titans (1999) - Forever remembered for "The Yard"...which is how short Kevin Dyson came to sending the Super Bowl into overtime if not for a miracle tackle by the Rams' Mike Jones.

Broncos over Packers (1997) - The Mighty Elway's first Lombardi Trophy, and he earned every facet of it. After four embarassing loses in the big game, Elway and Co. (including a phenomenal performance by a migraine-stricken Terrell Davis) won the trophy back for the AFC, losers of the previous 13 titles. A no-name defense stuffs Brett Favre late in the fourth quarter to shock a nation.

Giants over Bills (1990) - Back-up QB Jeff Hostetler brings the Giants back from a 12-3 defecit after being knocked on his ass for most of the game. It was the Giants' ball control offense against te Bills' no-huddle. The no-huddle almost proved to be the winner until, with seconds left, Scott Norwood missed the game-winning field goal to give the Giants the closest-ever win in a Super Bowl, 20-19.

49ers over Bengals (1988) - It was "The Drive". It was Montana and Rice with a lot of Taylor thrown in. Down 16-13 with 2:36 left and on thier own 3, Joe Montana led a drive that covered 97 yards and culminated in a TD to John Taylor who had no catches in the game and lined up at tight end.

Steelers over Cowboys (1975) - Lynn Swann. Lynn Swann. Lynn Swann. Oh, and something called the Steel Curtain. The closest and best of the great games played between these two storied franchises.

As an old codger, I would have to say 1969 NY Jets upset victory. 😀

The best one was Super Bowl XIII when the Steelers beat the Cowboys for the second time in the Big Show, 35-31. Now that game had everything! Ahhh, those were the days, my friend!

There were some beauties. The Patriots winning two years ago, the Rams/Titans one. X and XIII (Pittsburgh beating Dallas) rank as the most thrilling end to end...and the end results of both suited me quite well also.
My absolute favorite Super Bowl (one that Dallas fans might think of in terms of a laxative LOL) is XXI. Things looked very bleak early on, after Doug Williams hurt his knee and Jay Schroeder did what could be expected of him: cough it up. It had all the makings of one of the great nightmares, and I sat there on the couch, dying a slow death. Then, all of a sudden, Williams came back in and started landing one touchdown bomb after another, and before I was done with only two or three cigarettes from the pack, The Redskins were ahead by four scores. They wiped Denver out like Nagasaki, and no more did I have to suffer hearing about the Three Amigos or the Orange Crush or anything else, or about the team everyone else in my house pulled for, or stupid, annoying racists droning on about how a Black quarterback wasn't worth a shit.
For one brief, shining moment, there was Doug Williams, on top of the world. Still my favorite moment.

I have always found Superbowls for the most part to be one sided. For example, the one mentioned where the Niners routed the Broncos 55-10. Another one is when the Niners routed the Chargers when Steve Young established himself as one of the elite QB's in the NFL.

My three superbowls I enjoyed most were the 1988, when the Bengals were clinging to the lead late in the game, and Montana, the best QB in the two minute drill, did what he did best, and pulled it out in the last seconds of the game. I also enjoyed the Pats and the Rams in 2002. I enjoyed that mostly because of the outcome. I think everybody in America was rooting for the Pats and they also came back from a deficit to pull out a thrilling victory. I have to say, the one I enjoyed most was the (surprise!!) Giants and Bills in 1990. What can you say about that game?? A back up QB rallies the troops from a deficit and just barely hold on when the kick goes wide right. Everybody, including me, thought the Bills were going to win when Thurman Thomas gained like 30 yards to set up the fateful FG.

I think one that wasn't mentioned was the Giants Broncos in 1987. Eventhough the score was a little one sided, it was a little closer than the score indicated. In that game the Giants were losing and Phil Simms goes on to have one of the best games anybody can have were he completed 22-25 passes, have like a 158.3 QB rating for the game, and won the MVP honors. In my opinion, that is were Simms began to establish himself as a top QB and Taylor and Co. went to work to knock Elway on his ass for most of the 2nd half.

Um....

I don't see the '86 superbowl with Bears/Patriots....

🙄

I'll assume it's just a slight oversight, and cast a write-in vote for it.

😱

Da Bears.

😉

Oh, I'm old enough...the first Super Bowl I watched was the '76 Raiders/Vikings game. That's what forever marked me as a Minnesota fan. Yeah, they lost, but I liked the unis better. Sue me, I was 9.

I also enjoyed the '85 Bears/Patriots game (still one of the last holdouts for the old uniforms) I didn't include games like that, simply because I wanted to gauge the commonly regarded "best games".

Even a blowout can be fun to watch if you're a big fan of the winning team. I remember having to put up with all the shit from the redneck Cowboy fans when they went on thier tear in the '90's. Ironically, the '91 Cowboys/Bills game does rank as one of my favorites, albeit for different reasons. I remember it like it was yesterday...

I was dating this girl who was a huge Cowboys fan (huge fan, not huge girl 😉 ) and we went to the local watering hole for the Super Bowl Party/Buffet/grabass and they were giving away a chip for what you were drinking whenever the score changed. A white chip for a draft beer, a red chip for a mixed drink, a black chip for top-shelf...that sort of thing. My friend Randy and I were about the only two pulling for Buffalo, and we started with Jack Daniels and Coke. The first time the Cowboys scored and the bartender handed us a black chip, we decided to turn the impending blowout to our advantage. We bought a few more beers, but kept the Jacks and nursed them. Each time the score changed, we flashed out top-shelf drinks and got another black chip. The final score was 52-17 if memory serves, so we each wound up with around 8 or 9 chips and the following day off. We walked in the bar at noon the next day with a handful of free drink chips and stayed pretty polluted all day free.

Great game. One of the best. 😀

i voted for the 97 Superbowl between the Broncos and Packers. you had two of the all time greatest QB's in that game, two guys that people love and the game was emotional. Terrell Davis basically won the game, but who can forget Elway's scramble by the goal line, sacrificing his body to gain the 1st down? that was a great game.

the others listed also were great games to watch for the casual fan. however, i LOVED the 55-10 game with the 49ers and Broncos. i LOVED the blowout win with the 49ers and Chargers. hey, i'm a 49er fan. but in terms of an exciting game, the ones listed were great, although last year's Raiders/Buccaneers was a good game to watch. who in their right mind would like the Raiders?

Jets/Colts..

Everyone since then has been a let down. Since the Mid 80s it's been a bunch of average teams, playing below average football, in an average league.

Tron

With all of the nods, I take the blame for being remiss in not including Broadway Joe's "guarantee" win over the favored Colts. There were several other games that could have been included for various reasons (Caro Yepremian, anyone?).

I know we're going OT here, but nevertheless:
I have even better memories of Redskins' playoff wins back in the '80s. The two years in a row where they stuck it to Dallas in the Championship game (one of them eventually leading to the defeat of the Miami Dolphins, aka "The Team That Accomplishes Nothing"). There was a very, very satisfying win over Philadelphia at decade's end, which culminated in the departure of Buddy Ryan (sic semper social misfit bullying Southern ayholes). However, Mr. Lazarus, I still look back fondly on the two years in a row that we bitchslapped da Bears, and rammed that grapefruit up Ditka's rear end.
Sorry...
😛

No ill will intended, Laz...just that there are NO Chicago Bears fans here, and I've been waiting fifteen years to needle one over the Grapefruit Bowl...
The happiest of New Years to you and the Meems
😉

That's ok....

I used to think I was the only person on Earth turned on by tickling, but I was wrong there, too....

Da Bears.
