Creator Of Superhero Green Lantern Dies In Wisconsin

MUSKEGO (AP) -- The man who created the comic book superhero Green Lantern has died in Wisconsin.

Martin Nodell died of natural causes at home in Muskego last weekend. He was 91.

Nodell was looking for a new idea for a comic book in 1940 when he was waiting for a New York subway. He saw a trainman waving a lantern with a green light, meaning all was safe. He was inspired.

Nodell imagined a young engineer, Alan Scott, a train crash survivor who discovers in the debris an ancient lantern made from a green meteor. Scott makes a ring from the lamp that gives him super powers to fight crime.

Nodell drew the character until 1947 under the name Mart Dellon. After its cancellation, the series was reborn in 1959 and has been revived several times.

Though I'm not much of a Green Lantern fan, I have to say that whenever the creator of any icon dies, it comes as an odd shock to me. A small part of us seems to expect these people to live forever.

Except for Jack Nicholson. I swear, that guy will out-live all of humanity and creation.

Oh gosh... Bless Marty. I loved the Green Lantern -- the premise that the strength came from willpower... And Marty did the comic convention circuit even in his latter years. I saw him every now and then. Always kind and thankful for every fan. There was a heckuva guy. He'll be missed.

drew beat me to the reciting of the oath...but GL has been through many changes over the years and is one of the best superheroes in the comics to day or from 60-70 years ago.

It is sad, even tho they radically changed the chars and Hal jordan turning evil and eventually sacrificing his life to restart the sun, it was one of my dc staples i always read

geek mode-on: Just in point of fact, Hal's recently been reborn as GL again, and Nodell created the Golden Age Green Lantern, who had a different power source from Jordan and the other following GLs.
